Default Max !

I think most people have theirs set at max and any light activity should be looked into.

The correct answer is maximum, unless you (or someone who does) has tuned it with a pair of det cans, or similar.

Mines on max but get first couple of LEDs lighting when close to rev limiter - normal according to instructions

that's right, Gizmo. 1 green light comes on and the 2nd flashes a couple of times as I near the redline and I've been told this is normal.

Orange lights you want to worry about and get checked out. But then you'd be getting green lights at low revs anyway.

From the experience of unfortunate mates when the red light comes on it's too late.

I wonder how many reds you'd need to experience before piston melt-down...? Obviously, if you only had a couple, and you knew it was down to fuel or excessive boost, you'd get some octane booster, or turn the boost down, before booting it again. But what damage would have already been done...?

I think what you're talking about is if the lights go orange. The only people I know who have experienced a red light it was well too late. Rod's let go, piston's melted...

It's the orange lights that warn you to use octane booster, less boost (or better yet water spray on the manifold and an FMIC!).

I know for a fact that my KL does pickup background noise such as fmic pipework knocking and hitting rev limiter etc.. and that does cause red lights.

Surely it takes more than one instance of det to cause a terminal problem! I've had a couple of reds, which were due to wnak Texaco fill up in Weston. The spikes were en-route from Weston back up to The Midlands on the M5. The first I thought I'd imagined. The second one resulted in a very gentle drive to the nearest services, where the boost was reduced to 11psi for the remainder of the journey. Fortunately, by the time I'd got back home, there wasn't much fuel (if you can call it that) left in the tank, so a couple of bottles of Millers, and a couple of tanks of Optimax later, all was well again.

Since then, I've had no symptoms of a "melted piston", no further Knocklink activity other than greens, and no fuel other than BP Ultimate or Optimax, + Millers.

So my original question still stands. How many occurrences of det before a problem develops...?

oooeerrr mines set to max and I get red lights when wot in 3 and 4th near the limiter, Last time it was checked the dergree of det was fine, I am running about 1.1-1.2 bar depending on gear and optimax fuel, will adding an octane booster help or does it need adjusting properly, if so who can do it for me?

The Judge - don't know the answer to your question I'm afraid.

I was just saying that the only one's I've ever seen with red lights were engines that had already let go... I'd suggest not too many instances of det to cause damage. Don't use Tesco fuel again! You're better off running out and getting Subaru Assistance to bring Optimax :-)

Or carry a bottle of Pro Boost in the car - which I've been meaning to buy for AGES!

Or pissing in the tank...!

That would worry me. If you got used to seeing red lights, "knowing" that they weren't indicating det, you could quite easily become complacent. Also, how would you know if you ever got genuine det in the future...?

Talking I really wasn't sure about posting this, but ...

See here http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/showthread.php?t=300380

As soon as the car was on WOT the knock link lit up all 5 lights like a christmas tree, and it's probably been doing it for a very long time.

New MAF and decent octane booster later and absolutley zero activity on the knock link, so I know that the KL isn't over sensitive.

Now, I'm not saying for 1 second if you get reds ignore it, it'll be okay, cos even after having had reds on this one, there is no way on this earth I'll ignore it and let it continue. I'm just saying that it quite obviously doesn't appear to be the be all and end all of it.

BTW, she is an STi, and so I think the forged pistons etc probably have a lot more to do with the car surviving det than anything else. Whether a Uk Turbo or a WRX would put up with the same or not, I very much doubt.

Actually Krade, that would worry the **** out of me too. You should never see reds at all, unless you know it's being caused by something non engine related.

For example, when I leap over bumps the bottom green flashes
