This is strange. I get in to run down to the shop, 5 minutes down the road, buy the milk, get back into the car and it won't start. I try a few times to start it and there seems to be no problem with the battery. I leave it rest a while, say ten minutes, then try it again and hey presto off it goes as if nothing is wrong. It's a MY96 WRX.
Any ideas.

This is absolutley no help at all, but someone I know had this very problem and they told me what caused it. But I'll be buggered if I remember wot it woz. Sorry

Crank or Cam sensor..

Cam sensor is below the oil filler and has three wires coming out and a 10mm bolt holding it on..

Crank sensor is identical but between the pulleys on the front of the engine just above the cambelt cover.

Remove and clean (don't muddle them though as I think they are slightly different) They work on magnets and detect the cam and crank passing them.. build up of dirt shouldn't effect them but as they get older the magnetic field gets weaker.. a clean with WD40 and a rag on the silver cylinder part should see you right for a while.. but you will need to replace the faulty one at some point or both.. but worth cleaning and seeing if it goes away to confirm you are in the right location of the problem.
It is more likely the Crank sesnor than cam btw..

yep - had the exact same problem - it was the crank sensor

i agree its the crank sensor i had this prob.. town end garage (tegsport)sold me one second hand for £25 better than the £100+ from dealer
