Most start with a back box and a panel filter or induction kit.

Backbox!! Give you something to look at/polish and will make you think you are going faster 'cos it sounds Soooooo much better
Then think/read about a filter (panel or induction cone kit) and downpipe to remove the Primary cat

How far do you want to go and wht do you have to spend?

pongo you should get your car ppp'd ,then go for the prodrive driving pack, which will give you new lower and stiffer suspension and a nice new shiny set of 17's. Then a quick shift and a set of PIAA's so that you can see where you are going. Here wait a second that sounds like my car, so maybe you shouldnt, i dont want to get into the wrong car after a hard shift at work.
LOL then again i should be ok mines is MY99.

see you at work

The Knocklink is an invaluable piece of equipment, that comprises a small sensor that you connect to the block of your engine, and a black box with LEDs (2 green, 2 amber, 1 red) that you mount somewhere visible in your cabin. It basically monitors for detonation within your cylinders, which can be a problem if raising boost pressure using a manual boost controller. However, if done safely, raising the boost to a sensible level can be one of the cheapest mods avaiable, as long as you don't raise it any higher than a couple of psi below fuel cut (or get a fuel cut defender), and use a Knocklink to monitor for detonation. You may also need to use an octane booster (the Knocklink would soon tell you if that was the case). You would definitely need to use Shell Optimax or BP Ultimate, if you don't already.

As for other mods, a decat downpipe always helps. And as already suggested, a better silencer makes a whole lot of difference to the sound

Thumbs down

DON'T start on modding the '98 power until you've sorted the brakes, then the suspension.

Alcazar, (Who has done both and MUCH more: )

Brakes (discs, pads, and hoses) first
Then Full de-cat then Induction kit Then Dump valve. Then it depends on the size of your wallet !!

Do I take it then a MY98 has the amazingly crap 2 pot brakes...? In which case, you might want to sort those first!

I wouldn't bother with an induction kit. The standard air box is more than capable of reasonable power. You could go for a replacement panel filter, such as K&N, Green, STi, but you probably won't notice much difference to be honest. There are plenty of other variables to sort out before the air intake becomes the weakest link.

As for a dump valve, if there's nothing wrong with your OEM recirculating DV, I wouldn't bother changing it. It can handle reasonable amounts of boost. And replacing it with a VTA type won't increase the performance of the car, but will make it sound like an RS Turbo...

Only one thing wrong with that Stevie(West Lothian Scooby) is that a shift on the loading is NOT what i would call i HARD shift lol and as for getting into the wrong car that would never happen yours is ALLWAYS way cleaner than mine .LOL
