Hi all. Just a quick one, if anyone has any thoughts, much appreciated. Loud metal to metal scraping noise and squeeling coming from front NS wheel. quietens when braking or steering (mostly left hand down) which I put down to load because I think It's a wheel bearing. all new front discs and pads recently. Many thanks, Matti.

I'd check the brake pads, as you say yourself "quietens when braking", perhaps the anti squeal shims are not fitted correctly or anti squeal paste not been used between them. Wheel bearings normally "groan" or whine, but at a reasonable speed, not squeal at low speed.

Sounds like the pad wear indicator.
scoobs don't have a light on the dash. Instead they use a small springy piece of metal on the pad which comes into contact with the disc just before the pad wears out.

does anyone know if it is possible to run without the indicator shim or modify it somehow to stop it squealing? I put new brake pads on about a month ago my STi7 sounds ridiculous.

Thanks for that everyone. Had the wheel off last night and found a little stone trapped between the rear of the disc and the thin metal plate at the rear. Cheers, Matti.

Thumbs up

Only just seen this thread, and was just about to post that info:

I've had it happen to me twice, but it doesnt happen any more after I removed the backplates to fit 335mm discs:

Question

mine have started squeeling after my 51K service .. mainly when reversing at low speed, slowing down to near standstill and braking to a standstill at junctions.

I got TSL to take a look- but lo and behold it didnt do it when graham drove it

could it be hubs? as when reversing obviously the brakes arent beign touched.. and TSL could find nowt wrong with the brakes..

There are small clips which stop the pad moving up and down in the caliper, mine were missing and causing the same as you. Also make sure that the anti squeel shimms are on the right way round and you have a reasonable amount of paste between the pad and shimms. Worked for me. Quiet as a mouse now!
