Unhappy

Normal running according to SECS, for my car is around 87 degrees, creeping up and down a bit for hard driving and maybe getting as high as 97, after fans cut in @ 94/95 & thats on a HOT day.

Yesterday, went into town in the morning. Quite cold, but not frozen. 30mph for 1 mile & whilst queing for the supermarket carpark, SECS starts flashing @ 101 Rises to 108 by the time I get to stop Doesn't seem to budge downwards even with fans going non-stop

Switch engine off, wait 30 secs & back on & it drops down to 94 before I decide maybe a glitch & turn off. Checked (with engine running & 94) for signs of steam or water leakage & none...

Started up this evening, drove through the local(ish) village and out the otherside, by which time temp was going up again Went as far as 99 before droping down to about 89 again. I had to pull over to let the wife out when we got to where she was going & temp starts shooting up again - 111 Tried the engine off/on thing again and under normal driving, temp appears OK (but fluctuates between 87 & 91) but as soon as you come to rest, creeps up again.

BUT gave it a small blast just before we got home & came to rest & temp (to let turbo cool) & temp was fine

So whats it going or likely to be? No obvious steam or leaks, just happened suddenly (well last 2 days) prior to which no rough or fast driving. Heating appears to work fine. Power appears OK.

Sensor? Water levels (checking tomorrow)? Blockage?

I'm off to Ireland on Saturday & need PTMW! 100%

Bah!

Think its on the near side of the engine, at the bottom near the bottom hose to block connection?

bottom passenger side radiator hose slides over an ally tube. .that ally tube is a flange covering the thermostat.. beware.. The bolts can snap..

Check top and bottom rad hoses when temp is high, if they are not both hot then its the stat, if the are and so is the rad then you could have a head gasket gone.

**** its cold out there!!

Right...

Looks to be thermostat ( )

Checked filler cap & dipstick for white sludgey deposits - none...

Started engine & ran on tick-over until warm. Watched needle creep up whilst feeling top/bottom hose. Top got warm, bottom not warm, in fact cold.

It got to about 87 & much the same, so I squeezed top & bottom hoses (as you do ) & bottom started to get warm. Temp rising on SECS

But

It max'd @ 96, fans hit in, down to 88 & then the slow rise back to 96 again, when it did the same. Ran engine for 20/25 mins.

Sticky thermostat I reckon?

That'll be a relief but still a PITA...

I would go for the thermostat too. Simultaneously, would be a good time to flush/replace your coolant, if you haven't recently done so.

Yup, agree sticky thermostat - stick your heater on full (a/c off) if it starts overheating until you get it fixed.

Another vote for thermostat, not that you really needed one.

Thumbs up

LOL

I topped up the coolant 'cos it was down, ran the car for 15 mins, then topped again.

Went out for a drive last night & after 20 mins the bottom pipe was still cold. Temp was fluctuating a bit but not as much.

Over to Welsh's today for a new 'stat & seal, then down to SS to have it fitted as they couldn't today & I couldn't tomorrow & I'm off to Ireland saturday...

On the way down to Basildon, temp was moving around a lot & bottom pipe was warm but not hot when I got there.

Up on the ramp, fluid out, 'stat in, topped it back up (re-seat one of the hoses that seemed to have a wee leak) and ran it up. Immediately the bottom hose started to get warm ( ).

Fine and constant temp all the way home Need to check levels tomorrow morning.

Old 'stat had some score/wear marks on it & it was probably sticking.

Anyhow, thanks for the help & advice & thanks to SS for doing it at such short notice.
