Fuel smell but no leak!!
#1
I have got a problem.
I have ben suffering the last couple of days with really bad fuel smell... I have traced it to the area behind the air con pump. i have seen no leaks... tightened the fuel hoses and let my dealer have it too... the annoying thing is ot only does it when cold.
When warm no smell.. when cold it's terrible.. The dealer says the only thing that he could think it would be is a failing o2 sensor causing dramatic overfuelling before it warms up.
basically on idle it appears ok but rev it to fast idle and then back off the smell appears very strong...
suggestions?

Is the smell like neat petrol or like the exhaust smell first thing in the morning before the CAT has a chance to work properly?
If the later then a good chance its a leaking exhaust manifold?
The exhaust manifold to turbo has three (or is it four?) sections so there are several points where gaskets could have blown.
When the pipes warm up it could be closing the gap up?

If its at the rear of the engine bay check the emmision control solenoid pipework is still intact, thats the device that allows the surplus fuel collected in the carbon canister to be vented.

I have the same problem -

Only appears when the weather is really cold until the car is fully warmed... no hint the last couple of days again until it got cold this morning!!!!!!
Mine appears around the air conditioning pump for definate.... quite close to the intercooler hoses as a matter of fact... are these issues related?

This is very strange, I had the same problems, but it seems to have gone over the last few days. Can I ask what years your cars are? I initally thought it might have been petrol off my feet from the garage taken refuge on my mats, didnt for one minute suspect anything else... Hope I'm right as I hate working on the car with frozen fingers!
