I fitted the AVC-r as per instructions, and wired in to the ecu as per instructions.
Eveything works ok getting all the correct readings am just using monitor function at the moment, only problem is, the check engine light is now on, just a solid light no blinking.
I have removed the old solenoind from the car so now have an empty plug in the engine bay which was conected to the old solenoid, could this be causing it?

yes it is, refit and plug in the old solenoid, you need not connect any pipework to it, the ecu is sensing its not there, alternatively measure the coil resistance and connect a resistor of the correct value across the connector of the car loom.

10k works fine as EMS says, although it is a much higher resistance than the 30 ohms of the solenoid you can use a much lower power resistor that won't get hot and that will satisfy the ECU (just a garden variety resistor as the current will be small). The solenoid driver is high side drive (active low) so connecting it to ground is going to short 12V from the ECU when the solenoid is off to ground. Depending on the internal resistance of the driver in the ECU this could get it rather hot and it might not like it.
