Hold the car in 5th gear cruising on motorway at 70-80 apply full throttle this will give max boost at about 3750-4000 rpm and is when overboost is more likely to happen.
Oil contamination of the solenoid/wastegate hoses, causing overboost.
Pop down to Tiley’s and they will show you how to clean the hoses. If the problem persists after the clean, see Jerry/SAM’s post. Tiley's will also adjust the size of your restrictor.

Thumbs down

Wonder if anyone can help me ??
I have a MY97 Turbo and when driven hard i.e. if I put foot flat to floor I have a intermittent hesitation. Its like everything shuts off for a split second and can sometimes nearly chuck you out the seat.
There seems to be no pattern to it, just does it when it feels like it. If I drive it hard by gradually increasing the throttle it doesn't do it. Sometimes it will go for a couple of days and be fine.
Any suggestions ?? Has anyone else suffered this problem ??
Regards Jason

That's overboost mate, have you modified the exhaust or intake by any chance?

Get a boost gauge...then you'll see what happens when you floor it.
Possible solutions are:
1. Fiddle around with restrictor sizes.
2. Get an EBC.

Both options are best sorted by experts...

Thanks for the advice mate, I used to have a big bhp Escort Cos and that was set right on the boost limit. That used to overboost but only if you nailed it in 1st from standing start. This seems to occur when the revs are over 4,000 ish. Several suggestons have been the Lambda sensor ??? What does this do, has anyone had this fail on them, what were the symptons ??

Thanks

Jason

Thanks Bob,
thats when it does seem more likely to happen in 5th at that sort of rev range. The car was only serviced last week would Tileys have cleaned these items up then ? Where is Gerry / sams post ??

Cheers.

SAM= SecretAgentMan.
The overboost quite often happens just after a service when slightly to much oil has been put in. Get Dave (Tiley's mechanic)to check oil level and clean hoses. Also give him my love.

Yes, when I had the overboost problem Tiley's changed my two way solenoid for a three way one. But if your car is not under warentee or an import they will do a cheap restrictor change for you. If money is no object they will even change your car

Dont like the sound of the word "restrictor" nasty word. Will this make it slower ? How much roughly is a new solenoid ?
Thanks guys

The restrictor actually makes the car faster mate...it makes boost come on harder, and it's quite a fiddle to get it right without overshooting the target.

You've already got one fitted to your car, in the hosing between the turbo and the wastegate solenoid, just at the turbo outlet IIRC.

Wink

Don't misunderstand me mate, a car without a restrictor fitted between the turbo and the solenoid will have a much slower response, than a car fitter with one.

Dabbling with the size won't make your car any faster, it'll just (hopefully) remove the overboost.

But, first, clean the solenoid.
