Fuel octane rating for Evo VII
Was reading the spec sheet of the Evo VII, and for fuel, it just specifies "premium unleaded", without stating the RON rating. Does that mean 100 RON as in Japan or the lower grade stuff available else where? If the Evo can run on 97 RON or lower, that would make it one up on the Sti, which is so particular about its diet.
Jamesa, even if the car can run with lower octane fuel, does that degrade the performance by retarding the ignition, or is the car specifically optimised for the fuel? One may not risk blowing the engine, but may still require octane booster to max it. In other words, do you still get 280 p.s. with 97 RON or lower fuel?
Cheers.
Cheers.
? - All I can say is that the power output of 280bhp and fuel grade of 95RON were quoted on the same sheet.
Fuel quality ( not necessarily RON ) varies from place to place so who really knows what they are getting ?
For example, BP say they use a special detergent in their SUL 97RON which provides improved performance.
My P1 is quoted as 276bhp on 95RON but I use 97RON just to be sure.
Cheers

Jamesa, thanks for the info. If that is the case, that leaves room for future performance upgrades without having to worry about detonation while on normal boost, especially in the case of the new Sti compared to the previous generation.

Our EVO VII runs on Super all of the time and it has no problems. Ran it up at Powerstation after it's first 1,000km service (engine was still very tight) and it put out 280.5 bhp and no det.
Mind you it has got alot free and quicker since

Probably a dumb question, assuming the Evo 7 sold in UK is the same as the Jap domestic model, and it produces 280 p.s. here on 97 RON fuel, won't it exceed the voluntary limit of 280 p.s. in Japan on their 100 RON stuff?
