forced induction? is this a crap idea or what?

Hiya,
Someone else has already thought of it! You can buy a small set of high speed impellers that are supposedly a form of 'electronic turbo', not sure what they are called tho.
Might be interesting to experiment with different duct designs as you may be able to get more of a ram effect?
ta,
Matt.

I recently went to a rolling road session at Well Lane and one of the guys there (bladerunner I think) had removed a resonator box (?) from his air intake to the aibox to improve flow. This seemed to improve his power. This got me thinking. What if you did this and then instead of just piping air into the airbox, you could suck it in with small electric fans (prefiltered of course). This would obviously get more air into the airbox. I have a standard airbox with a k&n panel filter, as I was told that you couldn't get induction kits for pre 97 models (I now know you can) and I've heard they're not much better on the pre 97 than a panel filter anyway (even though they're much dearer).
This idea may probably make very little difference (if at all), but if your engine breathes freer surely it will improve bhp and mpg?
What does anyone think? Is this a good idea or is this thread destined for the muppet section???!!!

Great idea if you can
a) Find a fan that's big & powerful enough. Turbocharger blades don't turn at 100,000 rpm for nothing you know!
b) Remap the ECU so you aren't running too lean - an external fan will increase the volume of air in the car, so you need to make sure that you can match it with extra fuel.

This was discussed at great length over on the i-club a few months back. Someone ran the numbers and determined that to produce ~3psi of boost, the compressor would draw more than 300amps!

THANKS FOR YOUR INPUTS GUYS, IT'S STRANGE THAT THERE'S SUCH VARYING OPINION ON THIS TOPIC WHICH CONFIRMS MY ORIGINAL ATTITUDE WHEN POSTING IT.
STUART, I LOVE THE SCOOPS! THEY LOOK THE DOG'S! WHERE CAN I GET SOME AND HOW MUCH?
TONY, THAT LOOKS LIKE A SERIOUS BIT OF KIT!
LIKE YOU SAY THOUGH, NOT SURE HOW WELL IT'D WORK AND FOR $300 + IT'S A DEAR GAMBLE ISN'T IT?

Richard,
Have tried replying to your e-mails but I just keep getting bounced with undeliverable.
Anyway information is as follows:
I make the scoops (or can get them made by someone much clever than I).
The guy I use at present is quite expensive and is charging me 200 a
pair plus P&P, which is what I charge on to you (ie no profit). If I
get enough interest (0 at present) then I have found another supplier
who can make them cheaper at 120 a pair in fibreglass, or 200 a pair
in carbon fibre. But this involves me paying for a new set of moulds,
and I ain't going to do that unless there is enough interest!
Let me know what you think.

Cheers for that Stuart. Can't understand why the emails keep bouncing. Technology eh?
I am definately interested in a set, as I think they look the B*ll*x, but 200 brick is a bit steep. I know that for 1 offs it's going to be daft money, so I think your idea about generating more interest is worthwhile.
Are you going to post something yourself or do you want me to do it?
We could start a whole new trend here if we're not careful
Let me know.

Rich,
I have sold a few sets so far (4 to be precise) of which 2 have gone to the states. The scoops have been advertised on here a while back, and on the US equivalent (with the new price details) but no takers yet. Maybe a new topic would help, but ethically it would be better if you started it rather than me, I don't want to upset the community by being seen to advertise my "prodcuts" (though I hasten to add this is not a commercial venture)

Hi Stuart,
The bonnet scoops certain belong to a dog!!
Does the £200 include any painting, or is it that just the price for the parts. If you can get them for £120 then I would certainly be interest in buying some. They would give my car a very individual look (until everyone starts fitting them).
Please let me know if you are going to take this forward.
Cheers
Simon

Simon,
check out the thread in the PRIVATE section on bonnet scoops insted of grilles anyone?
we're trying to drum up enough interest to make it worthwhile.
add your name to the list.

Peter,
The car is still not back together, although the repairs have been approved now, only took a month! Hopefully the car will be back together for April 14th Rolling Road day, and then out on track on the 27th at Cadwell.
I was due to be at Wroughton May 5th, but this has been cancelled now.
Cheers
