Best fuel for maximum pops and bangs?
#1
I'm running a uk99 full SS decat. Whilst the pops and bangs are not particularly loud, I have noticed that going from Optimax to BP SUL, the number of pops has definately increased (much easier to get them on-demand)
I'm wondering whether going to normal unleaded would further increase them? (waiting for tank to run dry!)
Anyone have any experiences to share?

I think this is right - Lower the octane the hotter it burns.
So you could run your UK99 on 95RON and you should get more pops and bangs. I'd lag it instead, as this has the same effect of getting the exhaust hotter but its safer in the long run as the extra heat is due to the insulating effects of the lagging. Rather than using 95RON where it is the fuel burn that is hotter.
Hope that makes sense..

Wouldn't increasing the pops and bangs decrease performance?
and possibly cause engine damage?
Or are we just intrested in seting up a pop bang tune to replace the stereo?

hmmmm, this is a new one on me "lagging the exhaust".
Can someone tell me where to get the lagging and is it a DIY job?
Sorry to be a little off topic here
back on topic... i get intermittent bangs and pops, its not something i can 'make' the car do when i want it to though. Just happens from time to time.
Last night though, sat at some traffic lights, gently reving the engine ( i was trying to listen to the dump vavle ) and **** me, BANG, i thought someone was firing a shotgun at us

Good suggestion Dave - the centre is not lagged. The DP is lagged with cloth-looking white stuff.
What lag should I use on the centre section? The reason I ask is it would have to be durable because of all the exposure from under the car!
This could be my ticket to flames!

Consider though lagging centre section and the fact it will pick up water off the road. When stationery this will not evaporate as the exhaust will have cooled down. So the exhaust will rust and it's lifespan shortened by lagging the centre section.

Sonic,
That like the lagging I have on my DP - came with lagging when I bought it off here.
Do you think adding an extra layer would help things? I have one layer on mine.
Secondly, where did you get it from and how much?
Cheers!

Demon Tweeks sell exhaust wrap (as will other rally prep places). I think you can get heat paint to spray onto wrap to protect it from road conditions. You can also get metal ties to hold the wrap in place.
Also if its a stainless steel exhaust, how can it rust? I can imagine it eventually cracking from the heat, but I thought SS never rusted?
With my 22b I'm tempted to wrap the exhaust all the way to the back box when I fit a DP. Not only for the heat but the lagging also acts to suppress the noise.
