BP Press Release: BP launches BP Ultimate in the UK
7 October 2003
Internal Content
BP today launches the UK’s leading diesel and unleaded fuels. The performance diesel – the first on the market – and the performance petrol deliver significantly more performance and less pollution than standard grades.
Called BP Ultimate, the fuels were created to meet the specific demands of BP’s customers. They wanted more from their engines and less from their exhausts. They wanted the fuel to work as well on old cars as new, family cars as well as hot hatches. And they wanted a diesel version too.
The resulting formulations are unique to BP. In tests on a wide and representative range of cars on the UK market, they gave both better performance and reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and other environmental pollutants.
“What you get is a fuel that burns better,” says BP’s chief scientist Dr Bernie Bulkin, “so it releases energy more efficiently and you get less pollution.”
Part of this is due to the fact that BP Ultimate has twice the cleaning power of normal grades. This prevents new engines from clogging up with deposits so they perform better. And over time the cleaning power actually reduces the deposits on older vehicle engines to make them more efficient also.
“If you use BP Ultimate it can be like driving a car with a bigger engine or a newer model,” says Graham Sims, BP’s Retail director, “and if you drive a diesel the reduction in noise can be like the difference between a van and a luxury saloon.”
BP Ultimate is available today at 100 BP filling stations and by the end of the week at 400 BP outlets nationally. By January 2004 it will be available throughout the UK.

Sir can you swear by the Official Secrets Act.....No well its a 100% confidential
I have just called our Road Termainal Distribution manager and asked what details, if any, were available on "?" Ultimate.
So what I was told that due to certain formulae, marketing purposes etc, that he could not disclose the RON value of this new SUL fuel until the fuel is launched and the advertising campaign is rolled out on the UK forecourts and TV. It is NOT being put out of our terminal which supplies North England and all of Scotland as of yet. But silence on the ingredients so I cannot even offer any hints on RON value until they make it official via the forecourts & TV.
What I have found out its not a toal new fuel, but an additive enhanced SUL product.

Out of Ultimate(BP),Synergy(Mobil),Optimax(Shell) all 98 ron, BP and Synergy are the most voted ones now(Optimax use to be good at first)
I use Synergy for less knock?

If I was to guess, the chances of adding 3 RON with aditives must be quite slim. It's probably going to be 98 RON, I reckon. At least that makes two ~98 RON fuels now, so less hunting for Shell stations.

Ultimate Unleaded fuel is 97 RON.
In performance car tests BP Ultimate gave equivalent or better performance than Shell Optimax. Also BP Ultimate has twice the cleaning power of conventional fuels and will not only keep your engine clean but will also clean away deposits that are already there.
It’s not all about octane rating! BP have tested high performance cars that are sensitive to octane and we saw no benefit for 98 versus BP Ultimate petrol in these vehicles.
Unleaded, a few figures for you:
up to 7.1% more power
up to 5.2% Sharper Acceleration
up to 5.8% improved fuel comsumption
also reduces noise up to 52%
BP Ultimate Unleaded prevents 97% of (intake valve) deposits forming.
More Performance, Less Pollution

Ultimate Unleaded fuel is 97 RON.
However, my local BP (not a Ultimate launch forecourt) is still badged as 97RON.

I e-mailed BP last night with my thoughts copied below. they responded this morning so that is below too. It may answer some questions but raises others!

Subject: BP Ultimate site feedback
QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS:
Not impressed! I was hoping for 100 octane. Until then Shell will continue to get my money I'm afraid. This could have been a real coup for BP with most Optimax users switching over straight away, especially any people with JDM cars or modifications etc. Any comment?
Dear Mr Hall,
Thank you for your email regarding BP Ultimate.
It’s due to differences in the markets. In developing BP Ultimate for the UK we have sought to produce a fuel which provides significant benefits for a relatively small additional price. If we sold 100 octane BP Ultimate in the UK it would have to be significantly more expensive, and would make it less accessible to the UK motorist.
It’s not all about octane rating. Many cars do not get any advantage at all from increasing the octane number. We have tested high performance cars that are sensitive to octane and we saw no benefit for 98 versus BP Ultimate petrol in these vehicles and in some cases BP Ultimate provided more performance along with the benefits of less pollution and twice the cleaning power of ordinary fuels.
Thank you again, if you have any further queries please don't hesitate to call the BP Careline on 0800 402 402.
Yours sincerely,
