having spoken to various tuning companies, read the various threads on here I've reached the conclusion it's impossible to work out what's right and wrong, better or poorer.

Eg.
A tuner has said that resetting the ECU doesn't work..but there is plenty of evidence to say it does.

Eg.
One tuner says that the "chip" on it's own purely allows the engine more boost, but you need to modify the engine to produce more boost.
Others say the chip does it all.

What exhaust/filter is "best"? There are already a hundred threads on this.

As a club, can't we get together and create a database on parts ? Webmaster ? If people who have had parts fitted all provided before and after figures could we log this ?

I would suggest that the bhp/torque figures themselves are not reliable but the %age increase is..

so if ABC gave 10% extra and EFG gives 15% then ABC wins. What actual figures you end up with totally depend on what you start with !

Am I the only one bewildered by all this information ?

I agree. As a relative new commer to the Impreza scene, it's a bit difficult to work out what the best options are.
