Default another check engine light thread CEL

Hi, had a good read around and i no this subject has a minefield of answers so ithough it would be better to just start fresh.

first of all the car is a standard 2003 wrx wuth a dump valve. owned for three years and this is the second time the light has ever been on.

first time it came on was a few days after i bought it, i changed the air filter and it extiguished itself.

this time i was driving gently at about 30mph and it came on. ive checked the filter and it looks pretty clean. dissconected the maf and cleaned it light still on. also when unplugging the maf the car cuts out so i presume its ok.

a slight drop in revs instantly after start up but then runs pretty normally. maybe slightly lower rpm but unsure.

on checking the oil it was quite low so ive topped that up. light still on.

plugged a diagnostic tool in today but it would not comunicate with the ecu? so couldnt get any codes from it or reset the ecu.

ive tried to disconnect the battery ect light still on.

could it be that the low oil level has triggered the CEL light and it needs to be plugged in to reset it?

is there any way to reset ecu using the green connecter blocks near the steering column like on the classics?

the car still drives fine and boosts fine ect (havnt pushed it that hard under cauhtion) but it still rsponds well on the throttle.

any other ideas what to check would be greatly appreciated

Bub.

See if it goes out after about starts.......camshaft position sensor error / misfire and NPS fault (giving misfire CEL) common.

You really need to read the code / historic code

As Shaun said can be lots of other codes, which are pretty common on Subaru.

About the OBD reader, some are unable read Subaru ECU which is strange, but is truth,i've tried few, some working some no...

wiered thing is this particular piece of kit has worked on one forester and one legacy about two months ago.

the cel light is constanly on, the car is using alot more fuel recently than it used too. like 250 miles max to a tank of about £60, ive read that this could well be down to an
o2 sensor?

think it may be time for it to go in to local subaru main dealer. hate going there because they always try to blame it on the maf or plugs in past experience.

If you have in your neighborhood Subaru specialist which can check what is problem and this will be cheaper in more just one way.

If not try ask people which have OBD reader or maybe someone have which will work, but without the knowing what problem is it,its just guessing what can be,for sure you will need know what error triggering CEL

Yes can be to the O2 sensor which is usually common fault,on mine car has been replaced in 20k miles two times

Well this evening I had no choice but to use the car so taking it very steady I went about my business and to my surprise after returning to travel home a few ours later the light has gone out? All I've done is clean the maf and top up the oil. Also left the battery of earlier in the day.

Still going to take it to the diagnostic sensor on Monday just to put my mind at rest. And hopefully see why it's using so much fuel. Does 250 miles to a full tank sound about right?

250 miles per tank is sound right if you are running little bit with light foot,i've done best 330miles per tank, but this has been very careful driving

When is CEL off this mean you can have as you are suggest MAF etc.,but can be just typical WRX fault camshaft position sensor

Leaving the battery off has probably reset the ECU and cleared the code

Disconnecting the battery does not re-set the ecu or clear CEL light / codes / historic codes. They are stored on EPROPM and have to be cleared with select monitor etc..

Probably a camshaft position sensor error that lights a cel but goes out after about 5 restarts.

The early DENSO ECU didn't like the signal from the camshaft position sensor at high revs....bug / blob's can light off this CEL when near the rev limiter. Seems to have been solved by later ECU's.

Could also be a failing / faulty Neutral Position Switch which throws spurious CELS and stops AVCS working on the STi's.

The joys of the Bug randon CEL generating ECU LOL
