Changing oil grade for the winter
#1
I am currently using Castrol RS 10W60 in my scooby (MY98), the car is going in for a service tomorrow and I was contemplating changing the grade to RS 0W40 as it's approaching the winter. I know this thinner grade will be give better initial protection on cold starts but obviously won't be as good once the engine has heated up and subject to some heavy use. Any advice?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Please dont go to a 0w oil, you may well do damage to something, its far too thin for Uk useage in normal driving styles.
Stick to a 10w oil and retain some engine bearing life.

I would stay away from 0W-40. You might consider a 5W-30 IF it is a top quality oil. I have been doing some testing on a 5/30 over the last month. Prior to that I was happy with Motul 300V 15W-50.
The thinner oil runs slightly cooler and pressure is about 6psi down on previous in the cruise but tick over pressure is noticably less.
I am going to stick with the 05W-30 for the winter.
