nasty screech

It's also quite common for a small stone to get wedged in between the brake disc and shield. It's happened to me a few times, but generally only lasts for a mile or two.
Reversing ususually manages to clear it, but some owners have had to resort to taking their wheel off to dislodge it.
You should also check the spring mounting as Dobbo suggested, as it's also been known for stones to get stuck in their as well and cause some strange noises.
