As a soon to be proud owner of a 99MY 4 door turbo I'd be interested in hearing what the general opinion is of the Thatcham CAT1 alarm and immobiliser fitted as standard. Should I consider upgrading it to a Clifford Concept 50x? Are there any other good security options available to me (I've seen the gearbox locking pin on a couple of turbos, is it any good? expensive?) any thoughts would be appreciated.

I believe the standard security to be fine. Perhaps you should add a Tracking system?

No probs with it so far, though look out for the extra-protection mode keypad in the glovebox (it's very small, and I never noticed it for about a month). This allows you to lock the car so that it cannot be started until you key in your PIN code, even if you have the ignition keys and immobiliser keyfob. Useful if you leave the car at home and go on holiday, as quite a few car thefts apparently occur after the keys are stolen from the owners house.

Just had a look at the manual which describes the alarm. On the back it says "Model: Sigma M30". The list of features appears quite comprehensive, though the immobiliser is only 2 circuit.

I was of the understanding that most immobiliers are only 2 circuit or less. If someone is that keen to steal your car, then having a 3rd protection circuit isn't likely to stop them.

Rather than replace the fitted Thatcham 1 device with another Thatcham 1 device it would be better to invest in another form of security such as a tracker, or a good quality Thatham 3 approved steering wheel lock. (Halfords do one for £49.99 which encloses 2/3 of the steeing wheel and is Thatham 3 approved)

I converse quite regularly with, representatives from several different Police forces.

Impreza Turbo's are VERY popular with car thieves, particularly in the West Mid's, If you look back at the Postings on the Events section prior to Donnington track day you will see that the Police are aware of this.

Often very little you can do about it, if a thief wants your car he will find a way to get it.

The gear shift lock is a good device, though is a little on the costly side, most steering wheel lock bars are usually quite good, also more of a deterrent effect than an all singing all dancing alarm.

I know this is slightly off thread but I opted for the Tracker route. It doesn't deter thieves from stealing your car but you get the warped satisfaction of catching the bas*$%d's if they do!!!!
