Just spoke to a local scooby independant, (ex main dealer) about a PPP for my 02 wrx. He said that a guy who is an ex prodrive engineer will remap my ecu exactly the same as a ppp, using the same software, for £550 +vat. Or, I can pay him £1600 and he'll do it the prodrive way. I already have the WR sport backbox on, so what else would I get if I went down the prodrive Rd? A £1000 saving sounds bloody good to me though!

Don't they chuck in a high flow catalyst as well...? You would have a brand spanking new back box, could sell your old back box on here, and have no potential warranty issues to worry about. Just a thought...

Judge! I would probably sell the new back box, Mine has only done 1000 miles. Guy said that it would not affect warranty when I asked him!!!

No, no, (nearly broke into 2 Unlimited song then...!) I was referring to your alternative to PPP. If you were to get your own high flow catalyst (or de-cat) exhaust and a Tek3. I know it's not a visible mod, but I'm still not convinced a Subaru mechanic wouldn't "know" that the ECU had been tinkered with...

EcuTeK have developed software to enable tuners to map the Subaru ECU's from 1999 to current.
With the software we supply our partners with some example data which assists them in their development. This is so that they can benefit form our knowledge of the cars and the software and it saves them starting tuning from a clean sheet of paper. This is data developed by us for distribution to our network. It has been referred to as TEK 2. This is not correct. The TEK 2 was a file we developed for the 99 UK cars which we modified to a set spec. This was a catch all file and was what we used to supply on a mail order basis. For the 2001 ECU we supply a number of example files which the tuners use as the stating point for their work. There is now no such thing as an EcuTeK TeK 2 for the later cars. The tuners themselves can refer to their different levels of tune as they see fit.
We also work with Prodrive who use our software to develop their PPP. However, understandably we do not have access to their work nor does anyone outside of Prodrive. They have a dealer network who can supply PPP’s to order. The actual ECU programming of encrypted data is done by Subaru UK or Prodrive, for use in a car which has a known spec. (This is why the PPP is a kit of parts which are known and tested). It is not technically possible for an EcuTeK partner other than Prodrive to download Prodrive data into a car. So the statement that you can have Prodrive data from a non Prodrive source is incorrect.
I have to say that having worked with Prodrive during some of their testing and development they do exactly the sort of job you would expect. The facilities that they have available and the time that they can and do devote to this work is enormous, this is what you pay for. Although if you cost out exactly what you do get and factor in the increased value of the car at the point of selling it, I think you can see that they offer good value. Of course they only offer specific kits and this is where our other EcuTeK partners score is that they can offer custom tuning for cars with various modifications.
Just to repeat you cannot get any form of Prodrive data put into your car other than by Prodrive or Subaru UK, the person you spoke to is mistaken although they will be using the same tools as Prodrive and all of our other partners.

Sorry to ask what may have been asked before but what difference in power would I get on my STI7 if I went for a PPP. What exactly would I get for that money? ie What do they add/tweek to the car. Cheers.

If you're considering spending £550 or so on a remap, IMO you'd be much better off going the EcuTek route, as at least then the job will have some credibility when you come to sell the car. Much better "I have a Tek2 courtesy of TSL" (etc.) than "I had the car remapped by some bloke who reckons he did it the same way as the PPP". I think you can see where I'm coming from?!
