Or do they actually do anything aerodynamically?

I was looking at my car last night thinking about how it would look with no spoiler on at all, as the one I've just bought it with is a bit too massive for my liking.....

Thanks for that, I think it looks okayish - anyone got a piccy of an MY01/02 with no spoiler?

Actually, I reckon my photoshop skills might extend to me chopping it out digitally before I start messing with it!

i was told the v5 and v6 sti spoilers were desinged to help give the car a more stable feel at high speeds

so i would guess that the v4 mid level one does the same kind of job, i did notice a small diffrence when i drove my car at speed without my rear spoiler fitted but this could have been due to anything really

not to sure on the low level spoiler

Is that high speeds as in 100mph plus or *very* high speeds do you know?

Founds some pics of an MY01 without spoilers here

Not bad, or Omega?

Thought the prodrive spoiler( from a UK 300 .... and my WRX ) was designed to help effiency by allowing it to use less power at higher speed.

I have had a few on my Type RA all getting bigger each time, the back end of the car does feel a lot more squat and stable at high speeds (motorway 100+) with my 22b replica.

Don`t they look turd without the spoiler???????? (says he with a wagon)

Anyway, i`m led to believe that the STi5/6 spoilers add about 200-300kg`s of downforce at high speed

Edited to say that its maybe the 22b spoiler that adds that much downforce

I quite like the new shape with no spoiler - mine is this one, which is a bit ott, but hey, if it really generates down force then I'm more inclined to leave it alone.

As it is:

Without spoiler - please excuse the rushed and shoddy photoshop effort!

One hopes it was designed to do something functional, as it certainly wasn't designed to look nice, although one suspects that, like most of these things, it was designed to counter rear end lift rather than reduce aerodynamic drag...

Think it's the Scoobysport rear wing - came with the car so not entirely sure, but I've got a list of who fitted what at home so can double check later.

I'm sure I read somewhere in Subaru's literature that the newer spoiler (MY00 and later MY99s?) is 10% more efficient at 90mph than its predecessor - whatever "more efficient" means if not just "less drag". I suspect it is for stability.

To quote the US Scoobysport site:
The rear wings are made from Fiberglass and Carbon Fiber, and mount in the factory trunk lid holes. Designed with the help of GT series aerodynamic experts and Ford's WRC spoiler manufacturer, ScoobySport's aim was to create the best WRX spoiler available. The final product is a true carbon fibre inverted aerofoil positioned in the optimum position to negate the vehicles natural lift.
The wing is a true inverted airfoil providing actual down force and a cleaner flow of the air passing over the rear of the car, thus helping reduce drag. Making the wing section from Carbon Fiber means that it will not wobble and bounce in the air or as the car drives over bad surfaces. The brake light from your factory spoiler mounts in our spoiler, or a blanking plate is available. Spoilers are ready for painting.
