Non-turbo performance or rip-off "chip"
#1
Has anyone seen or bought one of the so-called performance enhancement chips (resistor) off ebay? They're supposed to plug into your loom where the Intake air temperature sensor was connected and give you an increase of up to 20bhp by fooling the ecu. Does this sound right or is it bull****! Does it not run the engine permanently on choke-no wonder it gets more fuel, not sure about the timing advance bull though!! Any info greatly appreciated.

From what I've read..
the idea behind it is the 'resistor' (which is what you pay the money for) fools the ecu into thinking the air temperature is cool and dense, therefore the ecu controls ignition advance etc for cool dense air. This is not good when the air temp is not cool though, the resistor will be telling the ecu the air is cool even if it's hot. This could mean dangerous levels of advance for higher than actual intake temps etc.
The resistor itself is only a few pence too.
I'm sure people on here with much better knowledge than me will give you a better explanation

I emailed the guy selling the AIM badged mod (dead rip-off of an aerospace company name and log BTW) with a few technical question regarding Knock, Knock correction, Closed Loop and Open Loop operation, engine load and revs.
Just to test if he new anything....
the response was....
IT WON'T WORK
Regards...

How much more do you need to know John? We don't need to see the details on this particular one, as these things are as old as the hills. As with most things that look too good to be true, don't touch with bargepole.
Making your MAF sensor misread will not do any good things to your car, period.

How many times, and by how many people do you need to be told these things are a con before you accept it? If you're desperate to find out the specifics by testing one yourself, don't let us cramp your desire to learn.
Specifically, your ECU likes to (accurately) know the inlet air temperature/density for a host of very important reasons to do with setting the correct mixture. Attempting to "fool" it into thinking the air is cooler than it really is will, if it makes any difference at all, result in the mixture being richened.
As Subaru default maps always run slightly rich to start with, richening even further will do nothing bar make the fuel economy even worse, and reduce the power output.
Specific enough for you?
