Have begun to notice a noise on acceleration between apx 2500 and 3500 revs on my MY99 uk turbo. Its very difficult to discribe but sounds like a fluttering noise and is coming from somewhere under the bonnett but can't decide where.

I recently noticed the car had a bleed valve and then found a super chips. The noise seems to have started since I turned down the boost on the bleed valve after reading nasty things on here about Superchips. I have since completely removed the chips and the bleed. The two maybe totally unrelated but not sure.......???

Also, the noise only appears when the car is upto full running temp and has been more noticable in the hot weather of the last few days.

Any ideas???
Thanks.

Soundls like there may be an aftermarket boost controller. Might just be the wastegate bouncing open/shut as the pressure/boost you're running is trying to be held at the level set by the boost controller.

but that's just my 2c worth....

I was going to ask about a similar noise myself. MY 94 full decat. When the boost starts to kick in I get a noise like a garden water sprinkler. No loss in power or anything, just annoying really. Is this the same sort of thing to yours Doobydoo.

Thumbs up

You may want to check the gasket seal between the turbo and down pipe, had the same thing on a 200sxdontdocorners I used to have. It was leaking and making a flutter noise.

I will do just that, as I replaced the downpipe with original gasket.

Second the gasket...

Could also be your turbo on the way out: they can make a "ticking" noise on spool up if the bearings are going.

Hi, I had the sprinkler noise on my Leg T when I fitted a Scooby Sport Down pipe. Group N rally cars also make this noise.

I was told that its waste gate flutter that you can here due to the removal of the large cat and heat shields acting as silencers.

I then added a Dawes device and in doing so removed the ecu control to the waste gate (I think) The noise then dissapeared.

During an ecu upgrade (Pavlo) I refitted all the standard pipe work and removed the Dawes. Hey presto.... The fluttering returned.

I dont know the full technical descriptions of the pipe work I removed when fitting a Dawes device but I think they go to the boost solenoid on the drivers side turret.

Any one whos fitted a Dawes Dv will know what I'm on about.

Pete @ Scooby Sport will put any ones mind at rest regarding down pipes and sprinkler style flutterings

Hope this helps.

Ste.

Could well just be the boost control solenoid pulsing/releasing air.

The rev range you mention is during spool up, and to get rapid spool up, the BCS must vent maximum air from the line between turbo and wastegate.

I'm pretty sure that is what that noise is on STI7s anyway.... nothing to worry about - just means its doing its thing.

My cars also just developed this noise, up and above the expected wastegate flutter. It sounds more like a mechanical 'growl' but it only happens when approaching and staying at full boost. I think its the same frequency as the off beat burble so I'm hoping its an exhaust leak rather than something internal Performance doesn't seem affected.

Did you get this resolved?

Justin
