Question

I've done a few long journeys recently and want to top up the engine oil between services. Any recommendations as to what to use? What do the dealers use when servicing? (Tried calling the dealer but they're shut today.)

UK Turbo MY98. Road driving - no track.

Thanks

Most of the dealers use semi synthetic, but you will have to ask tomorrow to be sure.

If the main dealers use Magnatex, does that mean it is good enough or that they are selling us short? My car is due for a service soon and I was thinking of buying some oil off Scoobysport and asking the dealer to use that.

My thought would be 'selling us short', but I think it's one recommended by Subaru, so can't really complain.
But much better to switch to an oil that works better in the car

Subaru dealers only use (or only should use) shell products as this is what is recommended in the user handbook.
I would top up with a shell 10w40 semi synthetic oil.

Sorry - wasn't quite clear there, me - I meant the same grade as Subaru recommends.
And also think that's the right stuff to top up with (the Shell stuff)

Subaru dealers use whatever bulk buy deals they have going at the time. My local dealer in Yeovil uses Magnatec semi-synthetic 5W30, and the previous servicing dealer in Gloucestershire used BP visco 5000 5W40 fully synthetic.
