It could be the wear indicator for your brake pads, mine was doing this until yesterday, when i changed the brake pads.

Cheers

Question

Car is MY01 WRX, done about 40K miles.

I've noticed a scraping sound when I've had the front window open. I thought at first it might be a brake disc, but i can just still hear it, even if the brakes are applied.

There are no other symptons / problems. Car drives OK, brakes are fine, tyre pressures correct etc.

Any thoughts on what this might be?

I have a similar problem on MY02. The rubbing noise is also coming from the front off side breaks.
Not too much of a problem but would love to know what it is!

It could be a disc guard slightly catching on the back of the disc. They are easily bent so take off the wheel and have a look. There should be an equal gap visible.

I have a similar type thing .. but it sounds a bit more like the tyre than brakes.. but I still cant work it out.
Dont have the gards on anymore & I'm sure it started a few thousand miles on these new GSD3's !

is it definatly metalic ?

Thanks Mark - I'll check this. The problem only started happening recently. The disc guard sounds a likely cause. If anyone has pictures that would be useful too.

Brake pads were done about 5K miles ago, so shouldn't be a problem. Noise seems to have stopped at the moment! Very strange...

IMHO 40k seems to be when brake discs start to wear and you get noise from brake pads catching on the unworn part of the disc. Drives you up the wall. Either replace the disc or buy an angle grinder from Wickes & grind down the unworn couple of millimeters on the circumference. About 17 quid plus grinding disc & you can make all sorts of mischief with it afterwards......

i had this problem when i fitted my new discs and pads, the retainer spring which holds the pads in had sprung out and was rubbing on the in side of the wheel. I only noticed when i took the wheel off and saw a line right round the wheel so I put it back in and put wheel back on and that was that no more noise.

Exclamation

It will be 99.9 % a wheel bearing failure?

Get it done soon before you have to replace the hubs aswell (like i did )

Sometimes it is just a stone between the disc and the caliper.

Hmmm

I did think about wheel bearing failure, but the noise has stopped at the moment - which I would'nt have thought would happen.

Also considered stone in the caliper - although I can't see any obvious scoring marks on the disc to suggest that something was caught.

I'll continue investigating and let you know.
