Hi guy's,

I was driving a mate back yesterday and while driving back i noticed that i had a funny noise when coming down the rev's...

If i would excelerate to say 3.5k then let the revs drop slowly down to about 2k there would be a sort of clattering noise coming from the engine, it did'nt happen all the time just now and then....

Does this sound like something i should be worried about...

Any advice muchous appriciated,

Cheers,

John.

sounds very similar to what i just had on mine, only happened when i lifted off and the revs passed through 3-2k or if i held the revs at around the same.
Turned out to be a heat sheild even though it sounded nothing like it.

Cheers mate,

I was hopeing that it would be something like that, i just had a listen with my mate in the car and we think it is the DV leaking, is this a common prob on the Scoobs...

Oh i have a Baileys dump valve...

Cheers,

John.

Grenno mate

Car giving you grief ? I thought that a d/v whistled when it was on its way out - I stand to be corrected. Be warned that I have a irritating metal type sound about the same sort of revs as you - very noticeable now the sun is out and windows are down. Its deffo the heat shield even though it doesnt sound like this, just gonna live with it for now......have you felt any problems with the car - Surely performance would be a bit flakey if your d/v wasn't operating properly ??

Hi mate hows it going,

I have'nt had any probs with the performance of the car, just the noise is getting on my noise,

Had a check tonight for a rattly heat shield but could'nt really find anything obvious, oh well the research goes on...

Cheers,

John.

Mine's doing the same thing. It is the heat shield on mine. At certain revs it sounds like a whistling noise. At low revs it makes a kind of bell type clattering noise. Just another job I've got to get around to.

if its a heat shield it could be craked not loose check shield by flexing slightly with a screwdrive or sommat, this will cause crack to open so u can see it , if not flexed to would be practically invivible, you can weld them up , gentelest type of welder, as shields are aluminium and just melt with a normal welder.

Unhappy

Been having this problem for a year or so now. Had the shield repaired and 4 miles down the road it started again.
Had the shield replaced (costs a few quid when Subaru do it) and 2 months later buzz. I put up with it until the 90K service recently when I asked them to sort it again. They re-adjusted the shield apparently, but when I picked the car up it started buzzing as soon as I rev'ed it.
I think I'll take the car to a specialist next time.

Swan, it sounded like a high pitched shrill whistle at about 3500-4000 revs. Didn,t have time to fix the cracked shield, so turned the broken nut mounting round to hook it over the top shield (near side). The mounting on the off side has now cracked and is making a bell type clatter at low revs.
