Faulty MAF -> blown engine?
#1
'ello all,
I think I'm missing something here. I've read that a faulty MAF causes leaning out (I'm happy with this part) and this in turn can lead to your engine blowing.
As I understand it, at high loads the ECU runs open loop AFR's. If this is the case surely it won't matter if your MAF is working or not as the ECU is ignoring the input anyway?

Hi Swan
How's your fuel situation in SA now
The ECU mainly uses mass air flow to determine load on the ignition and fuelling maps when running open loop, so it can and does cause underfuelling, inappropriate advance, det then bang You're probably confusing the lambda sensor, which is ignored in open loop mode.
Cheers

Fuel at the coast is fine (95/97), in Jhb it's only 93...
Ok, that's makes sense then, as the ECU switches to open loop it's unable to determine that the actual AFR is low and compensate accordingly.
