Just had some major work done, new crankshaft etc.
I have the first oil change coming up on Sat morning, (at 250 miles btw).
so questions are....
1) Should I use mineral oil ??
2) What viscosity (air temp is always between +4º and +35ºC) ??
3) When to start using synthetic ??
4) again, what viscosity ??
5) I presume max interval between oil changes = 7,500 miles ??
6) what interval do most peps use, 5,000 miles ??
Velohead,
Auckland,
Thurs night.

I am not expert on this but as I just bought a brand new WRX03 I changed engine oil at 200km with Mineral 10W/40 (Motul) and plan to change it again at 1500-1700km with synthetic V300 10W/40.
I have searched many times the Internet about running in a new or rectified engine and seems that these days most of the professionals agree that you should rev the engine free the first few miles, for example do some 15' runs with low to medium load (with complete cool down periods between them), some 15' runs with medium load and finally some hard runs with medium to high loads. Next, change the oil with same type mineral.
This helps the rings to seat perfectly against the cylinder walls and is more detrimental to overheating the engine rather using high revs, also don't use constant revs during running in period.
I have only 800km on the clock and have past 6-7000 rpms more than ten times for short periods.

I spoke to the guy today (at Subaru Dealer), who put in my new crankshaft etc, and he was supprised that I was going to change the oil at both 250 & 1,000 miles. He said that new ones get their first (oil) change at 10,000 km (!!!).
He has also put in synthetic 10w30, and again was surprised that I might use mineral for the first few changes.
Seems to be alot of 'conflicting' advice.

Another link about running in a new engine.
By the way I had to add 300ml (same type 10W/40 mineral) oil after 1300km of running in my new WRX.
All the mechanincs I know told me that is normal and every new engine may consume some oil during brake-in period.
Any of the professionals cares to comment?

I've just changed my crank, main & b/e bearings and rings. First 50mls was driven mostly on vacuum. At circa 100mls we mapped the car on Optimax to 7000rpm and 1bar of boost. Then changed the oil and filter (mineral).
In the next few weeks (around 1000mls) the oil will be changed to Motul 15/50 FS and I shall also do a Leakdown test. It will then be mapped for 1.7bar & 8k, that's not 1.7b at 8k btw
As a complete guess I would say I've used up to a litre of oil so far, but I've not had to top it up for a while now. I know someone who fitted phase 2 rings to phase 1 pistons, his oil consumption seemed to be on par with his fuel consumption...
Jim - good links. It's interesting to note that alot of new cars actually have fully synth oil in from the word go (BMW and Chrysler to name two)
