Went to fit my new twin dump-pipe today. Everything was going well until I got to the lowest turbo flange nut. The Ar****le who had the car before me had obviously tried to do something similar but managed to round the nut!!!!! then decided to put the heat shield back on. Having a break from it until tomorrow then I will try again. Anyone got any ideas how to remove this nut???????

Could be a case of getting a 'nut splitter' and a new nut!!

Nut splitter on that nut is a bit tough!
I had exactly the same problem.
I used a big chisel and a hammer, soaked the nut in freeing fluid, put chisel on top of nut and hit it, basically using the force of the chisel to turn the nut until it undid.

Use a Stilson, it'll be a trick to get one in but it will do the job with a bit of swearing

Alternatively use either a metiwrench spanner or socket made by Richmond, I have a set of these and they really do grip rounded off nuts (ohh err). Or perhaps one of them gator sockets like what you see advertised on TV. They are a socket filled with hardened pins that can grip on things that are round apparaently

If its really badly rounded it may be easier to get at it by cutting through the downpipe 15mm beyond the flange. This will give much better access to the nut and you be able to cut two new faces onto the nut with a Dremel or similar.

You can't easily use a nut splitter as the nut has a flange on the back and there isn't very good access to this nut, even with the downpipe sawn off.

Good luck

Those TV Advertised pin wrench things don't work. Mole Grips or a stilson, a lot of WD40 will do it, Alternatively if you can get old of a blowtorch put heat on it then grip it with one of the above, just don't set the car alight!

6 hours later and it's done! The dremel idea worked, had already cut down the side of the nut but the dremel finished it off and voila!! it came off when 'wacked' with a hammer and cold chisel. Had another one which was a bas**rd to get off but eventually it gave in. Runs much better now, lower down increased spool up. Does anyone out there who has fitted a twin dump downpipe noticed that the turbo can now be heard much more and the fluttering of the wastegate poppet can also be heard

Yes I noticed the wastegate flutter. Had mine on about 2 weeks now, Noticable differance.
I went for the Magnex one as that matched with the rest of the system.

Happy Times
Cheers

Is the wastegate noise a bit like an induction roar only quieter when accelerating hard? Just had an H&S downpipe fitted and have noticed this sound.

Marin

If a new gasket isn't used the leaking gas can sound like a nasally induction sound but I would have expected H&S to have used a new gasket.

Downpipe is a JW Racing (Magnex)twin dump pipe. I used an original subaru gasket (£12-) for the flange from D/P to turbo. There doesnt seem to be any boost pressure loss (11.8psig) and the car pulls much harder from lower than before, but the turbo whistling and fluttering is much more prominent.

I have the same magnex twin dump d/p and get the same flutter noise on spool up, when on boost it's fine.

Just fitted my new scoobyecu chip courtesy of David Wallis, what a difference! Holds 15psig to the redline and accelerates much quicker in all gears. Well happy now!!!
