Question

Is that possible?? Some months ago I ordered a K&N 57i kit from Scoobyworld and mounted it. These filters are pre oiled. Later I read that you should not oil your filter on the Subarus because of the MAF. Then I removed the oil from the filter, but I can see that the MAF is a little dirty now. Is it possible to clean it or is the solution a new MAF?

Do you think your MAF isn't working properly?
I think removing the oil is a bad idea as dust won't have a problem gaining access to your engine.

It does sound like the MAF is fooked. I don't know if cleaning it will recover it?

If the maf is not working I understand that the ECU goes into 'get you home' mode. ie running at limited revs etc.

These things tend to work ok or not at all.

If you have access to more than 4.5k revs, I suspect its ok. (they do tend to look a little dirty)

You should look at the effect the induction kit may be having.

If you did not do an ecu reset when it was fitted the ecu could take a long time to adjust fully. Also I suggest you need to run minimum 98 octane fuel + octane booster.

I did a similer thing with my P1. ECU reset, above fuel mix no probs. By the way, don't play with the maf unless you have a spare one handy. It WILL break!

Hope this is of use.

Steve.

I have no problems in reaching more than 4500 RPM :-)

Do I really have to go for 98 octane PLUS boost??

I don't know what model car, age or spec. you drive but, once you start with these kind of mods,I think you will find most people run 98 octane as MINIMUM.

The induction kit lets a LOT of air into the mixture VERY rapidly. Just think how quickly the mixture could go lean?

I'm definately no expert, but for me its 98 & O/B plus a Knocklink as minimum (should really have a boost guage as well!).
John Banks or Bob Rawle would advise you better.

As a matter of interest, was the ECU reset as part of fitting the Induction kit?

Hope you get it sorted.

Steve.

I did a ECU reset and it sorted out the problem completely, so that's super :-)

I also run 98 octane as minimum and think that my next investment will be a knocklink :-)

The fiter is pre-oiled lightly and cannot do its full job without it. Suggest you get some K+N filter cleaner and then re-oil following the instructions on the K+N plastic oil bottle.
A replacement MAF cartridge is about £70.

Glad you got it sorted.

Harvey's advise is well worth taking! (and on pretty much anything Subaru come to think of it!)

I carry a spare maf in the car, just in case. (you will also need an anti tamper key)

cheers

Steve.

I have dropped the K&N filter, have heard to many people having problems with the MAF because of the oil. Now I'll try with a HKS Racing Suction kit and hope that it'll do the job.
Thanks for the replys :-)

Question

Out of interest, what car is it? model, year, mods etc??

The K&N is a good system, be careful your not about to create other problems. Know the difference between oiled & dry and flow rates compared to the mods you have.

No point in huge induction capability if the ecu can't mix it properly, the engine can't burn it all and the d/p+zorst can't throw it out the back quick enough!!

Just what I've learn't, as I said there are others much more qualified to advise. Take your time and think about what your doing.

You may find the book, 'WRX Training' very interesting reading. It explains a lot in simple terms and blows a few mythes!!

Good luck

Steve.

Hi Steve

Thanks for the interest :-)

It's a 1999 GT turbo. I have a HKS Super Drager de-cat from the turbo back, as you all ready know I also have a HKS Racing Suction kit and HKS spark plugs. As we speak i'm trying to get an appointment with Prospeed in Sweden to get a EcuTek mounted. I'm not so keen on the preset EcuTeks and there is'nt any dealers in Denmark. Do you know if it's safe to go for a preset EcuTek?
After the EcuTek I think the next step will be frontmounted I/C and HKS exhaust manifold.

Didn't know they were also called a 'GT' Turbo hence my previous stupid comment!! (I thought you were refering to a diffent make!)

AFAIK both John Banks in Scotland & Bob Rawle at BRD provide preset ECU's. At the stage you are its getting a little beyond my experience.

Thats a lot of mods your looking to do, I can't see anything about fueling, bigger injectors, hybrid turbo, up-pipes or ported headers in there yet though!!

Hope you get it all done in the right order!

Steve.

Edited to correct ignorant comment!
