Question

Hi All,

I've just fitted an HKS Intercooler to my 96 WRX,tried the car briefly last night and was very concerned as during gearchange and coming off boost there's a loud noise which sounds like a "chatter", I have not changed the standard dump valve and never heard this noise before. I've checked all the hoses and can see nothing wrong,is this a normal after fitting the kit or is something wrong? Help !

Does it sound like a WRC car - it might be the waste gate ?????

If it's a chatter, it's your dumpvalve. You have if your HKS is significantly bigger than your OEM intercooler then you will have more charge in there to dump. Also, if it is cooling your charge a significant degree more than your old intercooler. then you are quite likely making a bit more boost.

Thanks for your replies, the HKS intercooler (front mounted) is about 3 times the size of my piddly standard top mount. A knowledgeable friend of mine has listened to the noise tonight and reckons it's the wastegate,it's a bit loud and I hope I can get used to it!

Yep it's a front mounted intercooler and comes with the necessary pipework to connect the standard dumpvalve.

I would deffinitly replace that mate..!!! with increased boost due to the front mount set up the standard dump valve will be crap and i doubt it will last to long..

There are not to many people who have a front mount set up with a standard dump valve as they often fail at normal boost levels..

Question

Which dump valve do you recommend? the car had 310bhp before the front mount and running 1.2 bar boost (Unichip, exhaust etc).

By the way boost gauge is not showing an increase in boost pressure, and Unichip has boost controller.

Probably be best if you go for a HKS dump valve mate
