Who old does a car have to be before it does not require a cat for the MOT?

northern ireland must be different then. i have it from a reliable sourse that there is no legal requirement to have a cat only that your car passes emmissions and hydrocarbons. i will stand to be corrected though.

I think you're all kind of right, cars after jan 92 (I think) had, by law to be fitted with a cat when new, however, they don't necessarily have to have one on to pass the mot, it's just that as the regs tightened up, it becomes impossible for some cars to pass without one, so, if you've got an early 92 Mini, with the cat removed, it may well pass an mot, however, if you have a 00 impreza, without the cats, then it won't!

The car in question is a Suzuki Alto, Works Edition.
660cc Turbo. We believe it to be a 1998 car however the local Suzuki garage seem to think that it is a 91. So I though that I could take the cat off and just get them to MOT the car from now on.

basically if it fails the default Basic Emission Test you go to vehicle specific tests
suzuki don't provide vehicle specific figures so you use default cat test
on cars first USED after 1/08/95 this is
1. at fast idle
co<= 0.3 %
hc<= 200 ppm
Lamda 0.97-1.03
2 at normal idle
co<= 0.5 %
if its registered between 1/08/92 and 31/07/95 you have a lot easier time of it as its simply
at idle
co <= 3.5%
hc <= 1200 ppm
the slck figures were to give cars which had been in storage the ability to pass the test, i guess no one thought a car would take 6 years to get registered.
make sure however we're not talking an import that has been registered in japan, outer mongolia, the moon or where ever as then the date it was registered there counts as the date of first use and in theory should have been noted on reg doc and by plate number

forgot to say if you can get the manufacturer to issue written confirmation that the vehicle when manufactured was unable to pass the emission test then it is allowed dispensation. certain modles were automatically allowed this by the ministry when the original emission test came in, eg rotary engined cars and a series engined cars both had higher fail limits on hc due to the problems associated with oil burning
