what do you mean splutters?

your first post said fuel cut type problem on boost.

fuel cut is harsh and happens if the car (i presume ecu standard?) hits 1.1bar boost, should be the same as my car, but it's not a splutter it's a hard cut out and trys to throw you through the windscreen.

watch your boost gauge carefully, in 4th for example floor it and see if the 'splutter' occurs if the boost goes over 1 bar (fuel cut if its harsh like i described), but if the 'splutter' happens before max boost ie just when you floor it and the you've got wide open throttle but not yet reached your max boost level it won't be fuel cut. If not then the car should be more missfiring as opposed to cutting and i would suggest coil packs or plug gap

edit to add bout plug gap

im talkin seriously!!! atleast 2-3 inches over the F mark on the stick, drained it imediatly and checked level

got the car yesterday and its suffering from a serious fuel cut type prob on boost, so putting 2+2 together i take it i need to clean me solenoid out

anything else i should clean out? odd really cause the car wasnt smoking, just goes to show how stupid some people can be, how hard is it to check a dipstick!!!!!!!!!!!

Pipes connected to the solenoid too.. it will also be in the intercooler but will be a nightmare to clean it out but will slowly work its way out through the engine etc..

I find it a nightmare to use the dipstick (but don't top it up like that)..

I'd drain it completely and fill with good quality oil like 15W50 Mobil 1 Motorsport (not 0W40) or Castrol RS, Motul.. etc..
4.4litres of it.. 4.5litres is max on dipstick I believe..

If they cannot top it up correctly it could be any old oil in there..!

Worth changing the oil filter too.. and Subaru ones are the best to use.. pre-fill it before refitting..

ok got some break cleaner, popped bonnet, took two hoses off solenoid couldnt get bottom one off, filled with cleaner, sprayed down hoses, also done same to the brown thingy on top, wacked back together, car took ages to start so guess it got through, but still no difference, also got a hose blanked off with a screw by the solenoid????? perhaps it had a boost guage?? dunno, it has a cone filter so maybe the hose went to old airbox?

Prodrive use Motul 300V Competition in the WRC car as they developed it together, which is good enough for me....

The pipe that is blakned off is where a fuel cut raiser would go.

Rob

p.s. it is nothing to do with your boost control.

i thought the pipe to the map sensor was for the fuel cut raiser???????????????

the blanked hose wouldnt be anything to do with my problem would it?

I believe the blanked off pipe normally goes into the standard air box and takes air in to the boost solenoid..

Try taking the screw out and seeing if the problem has gone..

If so then you need to plumb it into the filtered side of the intake or put a little K&N Filter on it..

I'd try it with the screw removed.

ill try it tomorrow and see

EDITED TO SAY

DOESNT THAT HOSE GO TO THE ACTUATOR? IF SO WONT IT BE UNLIMITED BOOST? MAY BE WRONG JUST THOUGHT I REMEMBER IT GOING THERE WHEN LOOKED TODAY

ok so i take it by the lack of replies the only possible fault can be the boost solenoid or map sensor or clogged pipes?

if so someone pls say yes then i can start seeking replacements for a process of elimination, but if theres other possible faults i need to know before spending my hard earned money

no problem for that bolt to be where it is, like rob said it probably had a fuel cut raiser where the bolt is now, it does go to the map sensor but through the red part first(dunno why it wasn't just next to map sensor)

this same pipe doesn't go to the actuator though so check that as you said it did.

The boost solenoids three pipes should go one from turbo inlet housing, one back to actuator and one to inlet pipe (which is what JGM is talking about)

Don't take the bolt out it's fine.

just check the location of the pipes though, my car is the same and i'll check where they go 2moro and let you know.

I'm sure (on solenoid) top comes from turbo inlet, next one down goes to actuator and bottom is the bled off air that goes to inlet pipe.

re cleaning boost solenoid, make sure you take all the pipes off, spray in the top hole of the solenoid and the cleaner should drain out.

not sure really, although the chap swears he hasnt, but the car boosts in first gear excellent most times, othertimes splutters.

james will check, couldnt remove the bottom hose on solenoid as was tight so just removed the other 2, when sprayed brake cleaner in it came out the second hole just as quick as i sprayed it in, also sprayed it in the hoses

Mine was doing something similar and it was due to a loose plug where the prevous owner had over tightened it!

Did you connect the green plugs under the dash when you cleaned it??

It puts it in to test mode and the solenoid will pulse so gets cleaned better..

There is two green and two black connectors under the steering wheel by the clutch in the loom.. thye have single wires to each plug.... usually tapped back with blue tape.. connect the green and turn on ignition and the fans run (watch your fingers) and all the relays pulse etc.. then spray the cleaner in.. sounds like might be a good idea to get that bottom pipe off though too..

Once cleaned lots.. connect the black ones on there own and turn on the ignition and the check engine light should flash the okay code which is about one flash a second.. if it flashes something else then go here to decode.

dicconnect plugs and start engines and perhaps take it for a spin to warm up and remove all the brake cleaner etc..

Then do a reset of the ECU if they had other stuff on the car and have taken it off now a reset might be wise..

connect both green and black connectors, turn on ignition.. press accellerator to the floor and back to roughly half throttle and hold for 3minutes.. then start the car and drive slowly... the check engine light will flash the okay code or an error code when complete (about 5minutes of driving).

Sorry I gave yo a bum steer on the bolt in the pipe..

Make sure the immobiliser is off when turning on the ignition BTW and only to the on don't turn the starter etc..

never endin story this, it is apararant from speakin to previous owner it has allways spluuterd on hard boost since he imported it recently, being a novice wasnt sure if car was supposed to do that or not, maybe looking at the blanked hose it did have some kinda fuel cut raiser or bleed valve on it, and was removed before importing or something, hence overboost now.

just a thought that popped into my head whilst rakkin me brains last night, although dont know how hard the boost cut was with him.

if it's spluttering on WOT it's can usually be attributed to either plug gaps (they need to be set at 0.7) or if your unlucky coil packs (circa £55 each)

If the problem is too much boost it won't splutter but cut out hard! What boost is the car running?? put your foot down in 4th and read what happens, overboost to what??, holds what boost after that??

Perhaps you should get it looked at by an "expert".

It always worries me when I hear about cars not running properly, because if you have a fuelling/MAF problem, you may end up with a very expensive engine rebuild.

Also reset the ecu

Cool

I take it from your picture that its a 93-96ish car. If its mainly judder you are suffering from then it could be plugs or more commonly on older & higher mileage cars perhaps even coil packs. As mentioned by others, if cleaning the solenoid and pipes hasn't fixed it then you ought to get it somewhere for a proper diagnostic.
