didn't really answer my question, have you done a check for possible cel error codes?(connected 2 black plugs under steering column and read off poss stored error code), if not do a search theres a site describing how and what the codes relate to. It's a good place to start. If you have, sorry but wasn't clear.

Ive got an MY93wrx ...
the clicking ..are you sure its the MAF sensor? thats situated on the outlet from the airbox on a pipe about 3inch diameter ...there's nothing in it that should click.
If the clicking is coming from around the dash board area, then there are relays just above the fuse board ...the relays are quite awkward to get too...one of them is the fuel pump relay.
The boost solenoid can click, but i dont think that would be a loud click, and this i wouldnt have thought would stop the car from starting.
My car cut-out and wouldnt restart ..i tried the fuel pump, but it turned out to be a corroded terminal and the power feed, this did cause the car not to start (but yep, it would turn over)
Hope this give you some ideas.
