Had my 95 wrx jap import for 3 months, no problems. This last week it`s died on me about ten times. When it`s hot or cold it just cuts out. If I sit there for a minute it starts again. If I try to start it before my minute of embarrasment is up it will tick over for a few seconds then cut out again.
When it does go it goes well, so before I take it in anyone got any ideas?

Has it got engine immobiliser fitted? maybe that is giving problems, otherwise, could be one of many things, might be as simple as a loose connector onto a sensor somewhere.

Wayne,

Does this mainly happen at idle ?
Or when breaking at junctions ?

it does have an immobiliser fitted and the thought did cross my mind too, I ruled this out because when the immobiliser kicks in it cuts everything including the ignition lights and they stay on when the engine dies.
As to when it happens, it`s always a surprise. Yesterday it didn`t happen at all. Today it went twice, sometimes it`ll die for a second then pick up again. Sometimes I have to wait a minute to restart.
I would like to replace the maf sensor but subaru want £230 for the whole unit. Any ideas wher I can just buy the sensor without the hose attached?

Cool

Wayne,

This is gonna sound stupid but bear with me
Take the plugs out and check their condition, I recently replaced a number of faulty sensors on a re-built engine ( engine bought from some1 on the board)after replacing them still had a prob which i`ve rectified, it turned out that the engine was overfueling due to having faulty sensors (mainly the engine coolant temperature sensor) therefore the car was permenantly running on cold enrich mode. After replacing the sensors I checked the plugs & they were fubar stuck new plugs in & all`s well now BTW the ECT sensor is about £30 from Subaru new.
Depending on if u r running the OEM ecu u could do a diagignostics check for fault codes, Or if on another ecu the sensor can be tested with a multimeter As can most of the sensors b 4 spending u r hard earned £.

did a diagnostic and it was flashing code 23 then 11 so i`ve been trying to source a maf sensor. Subaru dealer says because its an import the chassis number won`t enter his system
I was even prepared to spend the £250 for the complete unit.Ideally I just need the sensor, any ideas?

You can order an air flow meter sensor with out having to buy the whole unit. I'm just after getting one for my MY99 UK turbo (part no. 22794AA010). It cost the whole of £54 + Maggie (VAT). Don't let the dealers bluff you into paying mega bucks for a plastic housing you don't need.
