Red face

Just bought the misses an mp3 player and some tracks have faulty noise on them? Any idea what is causing it? sounds like a fast crackle of speaker! Doesn't seem related to kbps which I thought it would. Anyone else had problem?

Sounds like a problem with ripping the CD to me.

Take a look at the advanced options in your ripping software - it could be having trouble reading the disc, in which case there may be a slower but more accurate way to read the disc available.

You could possibly have a copy-protected disc, in which case the right thing to do is take it back and demand a refund - any disc that bears the compact disc logo but doesn't fully conform to the Red Book standard is defective. Uncorrupted MP3 are certain to be available on the 'net in this case anyway.

Try playing the MP3 using your PC - WinAmp and FreeAmp are good choices. This will tell you if the fault is with your MP3 player or the file itself.

In that case I think you're right - try using different settings on the encoder. My preference is the LAME encoder, 160kbps fixed bit rate, joint stereo, quality 2. It's not perfect by any means, but a heck of a lot better than some of the horrible encoding that's floating around on the net.

Topic for debate: MP3, the end of the hi-fi industry? Discuss

Sorry a bit new to all of this mp3 business what encoder, where?

I download tracks from net, then put onto cd using nero, then put into car stereo (mp3 player). At which stage do I use an encoder?

If you're downloading MP3 files from the Internet and burning them onto CD, you aren't using an encoder. Whoever created the MP3 files used an encoder to convert raw audio into compressed MP3 format.

Cheers Mark, any suggestions on where I can find good quality encoded MP3's on the net? Was using Kazaa and quality seems to vary significantly.
