Does anyone know if it's ok to put Magnatec 10w40 in my 94 WRX. I am currently using Mobil1 15/50. Looking for something a bit cheaper.

Stick to the Mobil , cheap oil equates to an engine rebuild.

I know you need to put good quality oil in, but £50 for 4.5 litres seems unecessary to me for a production engine being used normally. The boxer engine cant be that fragile surely.

oz555, Demon Tweeks in Wrexham have Motul 300V (top banana according to people on here) for £33 (4L). Or Halfords have been selling off Mobil 1 M'sport for £22 but I don't think Rhyl have any , I assume that's likely to be your 'local' if you're in Denbighshire.

Can't speak for Magnatec but just thought I'd give you some cheaper options that I know are well rated.

I've had Motul in my 1.6GL for a day and it's fine so far
Mobil 1 going in my mum's 2.0GL next week.

Ben

PS. YHM re your wheels.

Scoobyboy ... you can disagree but nobody with any knowledge of tuning Subaru engines would use it, it won't stand up to it and the evidence is all around us ... when it comes to trying to keep big ends in one piece do not skimp on oil quality. You can only base comment on experience so if yours is good with it, fine, but I have alot of evidence to indicate that it would be best avoided, especially a tweaked car, and so have other's.

I use Magnatec and my local scooby dealer has been using it for years and had no returns cos of oil problems but i would say if you rag the **** off your scooby, mobil 15/50 motorsport would be probably better.

Not saying yay or nay to either corners but a Scoob breaker I know uses Vauxhaul oil (Semi Synthetic) in Scoobs. He rallys and hasnt blown an engine yet.

My train of thought which is by no means expert makes me think that the oil which the likes of Vauxhall use has to be able to withstand constant usage on their road going workhorses, think about how many of them are on the road therefor this oil has to be pretty reliable. Vauxhall have Turbo'd cars in there range and I dont think theyre prone to blowing up.
Its a subject that kinda irks me a little, I went to buy some Motul 300V or Silkoline from my local Motorcycle shop as it was the only place that sold the stuff locally. After a long discussion they had convinced me that there oil Moyul 300V Competition was for motor bikes only and that it might be dodgy putting it a car. This went on for long enough and for the first time I walked out brain-washed. Then I speak to my Breaker friend and he mentions the above, and then I check the long list of oil debates on here still to feel none the wiser.
So is the difference between a 15/40 really going to break down much more than a 15/50.
Anyone know what Sti Japan use ??
Anyone know what prodrive use ??

Vauxhall semi synth ... I used that to good effect in my Cav turbo (slightly modded) for over 80,000 miles with no ill effect at all.

Motul have factually recommended the M300V for tis use, ... its also used by one or two WRC organisations ... have a look at the Impreza WRC livery sometime.

No disrespect to a motorcycle outlet but they deal with bikes and they are not normally turbocharged.

Its readily available mail order from Demon Tweeks and Scoobymania also sell it I believe.

Castrol RS 10:60 is also v good.

Its not just about the numbers.

My train of thought was if Magnatec is half the price of Mobil then I can cange the oil twice as often for the same money. Surely that can only be a good thing.

Ive ran magnetec for over a year, never a problem, im running approx 300bhp and 1.2 bar boost. changed the oil once from bringing it over from Japan

Dont know about scoobys, but my calibra turbo ran on mobil 1 0-40 and it was a bit thin. It used to burn alittle.

Motul produce a different type of 300V for cars and bikes, the bike shop would only sell the bike version. Though they may be able to order some suitable for your car if you ask them nicely.
www.motul.com

I'm amazed at how much everbody here pays for Motul 300V. Aldon Automotive only charge about £28 for four litres including VAT.

Magnatec is very expensive for what it is. Why pay silly money for a semi-synthetic oil when you can get five litres of fully synthetic oil such as Carplan Triple R for under £20?

Carplan? Are you joking? Wouldn't put crap like that in my lawnmower!

There's not much wrong with Magnatec for normal use. Scoobyboy will know that Subaru don't actually specify a fully synth. But as Bob says, if its modded and has a hrad life, fully synith is obviously better.

The castrol RS 10 - 60 is cheap, but good.

Question

Dark Blue Mark,

Given only a choice of Magnatec(semi-synthetic) or Carplan Triple R(Fully synthetic and available as 5W-40 or 15W-50) which would you use?

Please specify scooby or lawnmower

Carplan triple R (lawnmower)

Also magnetec is not rated!!
Its not semi-synthetic or fully synthetic. It says synthetic technology on the side but is not officially rated into a band!! Its in a group of its own, because of the nature of the oil!!

Andrew,

I have just realised my lawnmower is electric

I think Magnatec is fine, and many use it. Most of the people on here with mods will use Motul or other full synth, which is wise.

As ive said on here before, I have access to the top bods / testers within Castrol and they tell me it is suitable for normal use on an Impreza. For hard use / track days, use a fully synth. The guy I speak to (senior tribologist) did recommend other oils than Carstrol too, so I would take his advice. But still agree with Bob's point of view on mods etc.

Just my bit........

but I think the most important things you should look after on your car are oil and tyres.

Good oil may save your engine
Good tyres my save your life

Put a good quality synth' oil in your engine, specialy if you have arsed about with it.
?? Castrol Rs 10w 60 ??

Try Castrol Classic Oils 01954 231668

Rumy

Wait for it !! ;-)

Subaru South Africa used to use Castrol Magnatec at alot of the dealers. I think it was a 10W40 but basically the same as the stuff in the UK. They now strongly recommend using Mobil1 5W40 as per Subaru Japan. I think other suitable Synthetics such as Motul will also do.

We do get temperatures of 35-40C in some places which is a bit higher than in the UK.

Just 4 ur info I was advised by Rallytech (come well recomended for scoobies). That Mobil 1 can be too thin for Turbos, he recomended a slightly thicker "Cossie" type oil (wotever that is). MY98 wagon goes in for tune on Saturdy and oil change so will advise wot was put next week.

I'm with ScoobyBoy on this one, I've used Magnatec 10w/40 on my 95 WRX for 2 yrs now and not a glitch yet.

PS - Theres seemingly a few Scooby dealers that use Castrol Magnatec as standard so it can't be that p!sh can it !!!!!!
