Can Turbo Scoobies be converted to run on LPG, if so what is the result on power, in particular the imports.

AFAIK they can't yet. There's no multi point LPG injection kits about yet... Scoobs are aparently a headache because of the low compression flat four and the turbo...

I'm sure someone else can supply a more technical description...

There are LPG injection kits out there running their own ECU etc, but they are only good up to about 200bhp. DO NOT GET A VENTURI KIT, they are totally crap, it's like sticking a carb on your car but worse. The inj kits are what many manufacturers supply for OEM cars & it's proper stuff. There's new italian system out soon good for 360 bhp so I'm waiting on that one.

In theory LPG can run higher compression ratios as it's 114 octane, which should reduce any chances of detonation. Means you can run more boost (with intercooling) quite safely.

I've seen 2 Imprezas (a 94 WRX and a UK 98 turbo) with LPG conversions and my Dutch distributor had a Forrester Turbo that was converted.

All owners said performance was down by an insignificant amount but running costs were ridiculously cheap.

The only thing that has always concerned me is availability of the stuff.

Interesting if the car has been tuned properly for LPG the performance should be better. The problem is that they try to tune between LPG and Petrol so people can use either fuels so you don't get the benifits from the higher octane of LPG.

dnb - There are multipoint injection kits available, my dad had one such system installed on his 2.5 V6 Merc the other month.

Question

ECU's such as GEM's have more than one map capability.

Might be possible to have one for LPG and one for Petrol?

Just a thought.

Damian.
