Boost Problem? or det?

Travelling to work this morning, I found myself approaching a quiet roundabout, so I dropped to second gear and negotiated it just below 3000 revs.
As I exited the roundabout, I put my foot to the floor, expecting to shoot away, however the car hesitated and no boost! then it exploded into life and pulled like hell, then off again, then on again.
wtf?
I slowed down, and repeated the actions, dropping to below 3k and accelerating, and was met with the same thing.
I tried other gears, however and didn't notice the same problem. Also, after a short time, second gear seemed to return back to normal.
Now - all I can attribute this to (or is it me making excuses) - is I had to fill up with normal unleaded - I have 3/4 of a tank left and the last 2 weeks have only had journeys of 2-3 miles where the car has barely warmed up b4 I have to get out. Could this be the reason?
I'll have to try the car again later - does it need a good trash... *cough* ... spirited drive to clear it out?
My next tank will either be SUL or Optimax, depending on which petrol pump I'm nearest to.
Thanks in advance.

High low, high low, high low, high low, boost levels, ie never settling at one fixed boost level IIRC.
Not technical enough to know wether NUL causes it, its a long while since i ran on NUL. I know on mine when it did it with the standard ecu on, i just cleaned the boost solenoid and it cleared the problem
I would recommend that you ALWAYS run on SUL or Optimax for your car Steve.

Sounds normal and is a known problem. Holding revs at 3k in 2nd and then booting it always results in hesitation and bugger all acceleration. Can even be dangerous if trying to overtake. Always blip the throttle slightly before 'going for it' if holding revs in 2nd gear.
I am told that it is an ECU 'feature' designed to limit output for noise / emmissions testing in certain countries. Hopefully someone more knowledable will confirm this!!

Hugh, yeah on SN whilst ready 1st batch of post of my desk
, another batch due shortly.
Steve, spray brake cleaner into the pipes to and from the boost solenoid, and also into the solenoid. Then connect the 2 green connectors under the dash and turn the ignition on (DO NOT START, just ignition on full). You will then here the fans whirr and the boost solenoid clicking. Whilst its clicking spray a bit more into each port of the solenoid so it feeds the cleaner through.
Turn off ignition, and disconnect the green plugs.
Check everything is connected to the boost solenoid correctly and away you go.
Failing that, i am sure david would do it for you (he is nearer than me

The joys of being back at work....
David, I sent an email to the wallis2000 address about trying to source a couple of bits - header tank and pulley/belt cover. I've got this feeling that my header tank is going to start spouting water soon
