STI using oil
#1
Anyone had a problem with their St1 7 using oil mine blows out a lot of oil on cold start up and uses what I consider to be quite a lot during everyday usage - it has only done 6k, should it even use any oil?

Mine does too... only a little and I have done 8000 miles.
There was a thread a while ago and everyone said 'they do that sir !' but i'm still gonna mention it at my 10K service.

if i have just spent £25K+ on a new car and it was using oil i would not be happy at all.... it may be that it only uses oil in the running in period.... but i would be cautious... i mean if its doing it now at 8000miles what will it be like at 40,000miles...???
And you mentioned 'chucking oil out when cold...????'

So much oil in the exhaust doesn't sound right.
How was the run-in done? I've seen/heard a fair amount of incidents where relatively new STI7's suffer low time engine failures due to insufficient run in. Seems like the stipulated 1000miles/1600kms is grossly insufficient, before giving the car max load at high rpms.
I've heard of 2 incidents where con-rods broke on low milage decat'ted cars due to the cylinder being jammed in the bore. I've heard of couple other incidents where others are consuming excessive amounts of oil (large qty of oil found in intercooler, presumably recirculated from the heads)...
While this may be hearsay, I saw no reason not to believe the sources (ie they were not trying to sell me something etc). Just a word of caution to those with new STI7's. Run it in a little longer, the benefits are for you to reap later.

I will monitor the situation with the oil very closely - I also run a VW Vento with 113k on the clock and it uses no oil whatsoever so i am a pi$$ed off - thanks for your replies guys

I noticed a fine mist - spots on the intercooler (STI7 2.5k miles - Run in very carefully!) Is this normal??.
When I checked the oil the last few times (once I had chosen a spot on the drive to ensure a scientific result and only when oil stone cold!). It seems to be using a little - gone from from about 90% full (on cold mark) to 80% in last 500 miles.....it's a bit early to tell if this is me or that the oil is going.
How much oil does it take to go from low mark to high mark (cold) on the dipstick??

There's bound to be some oil in the intercooler, esp if you don't have an oil catch tank installed. The breather tubes from the headers run back into the intake (downstream of the filter but upstream of the turbo & intercooler).
As long as you don't have half a litre of oil in the intercooler...

Have now covered 22,000 miles in mine. The car has the Litchfield kit from the very start and for the first 8-10,000 miles did use about 1/2 lt of oil every 2,000 miles but after the first service has used very little oil.
For the last 2,500 miles have added quite a bit of the APS kit including the rather large APRSR40 turbo and have not had to top up at all.

From memory (only... and its fading ) its 1/2 litre from min to max but one of the more knowledgeable fellas will reply.
Mine seems to have stopped using it so much now.... I have had two recent very hard driving days (including one in south wales yesterday) and it hasnt lost a drop now.... 9000 miles
The only thing I have noticed is that its very slightly smokey on startup. I definatly run it it right. I was very strict on up to 4000 rpm up to 1000 miles service, then incresed revs by 500 rpm every 1000 miles. Had intermediate oil/filter change at 5500 miles too.
Any help ?

Cheers ids.
If it's only 1/2 a litre then the difference between 90% and 80% is very little indeed and could be more than likely due to me reading consistently and or the weather.
Checked mine again this weekend and it appears not to have moved (in approx. 250 miles) I think I'm paranoid (who said that???)

OK Oil consumption being monitored!
Accepting that the big three oils (Motul /Mobil /Castrol) are the way to go.
What is the recommended change frequency?? and do you guys change filter at this point?
Planning on having one interim change at 5k (Official 10k service interval)
Thoughts?
