Right, fitting bosch MEC723's these are marked with + and -, however which is which on the loom? Red and yellow?? (they also look like red goes to yellow and yellow to red at the connector)

The red one that goes to the coil is +ve. The yellow is the trigger wire, -ve.
Just switch the ign on, and test the plug on the engine loom, with a voltmeter or similar to ground.

David did you see the state of those coils and plugs in my other thread. Woooh was that some serious arcing, my engine is happy now thus my face

 

nice one.. but Id class those spade connectors as upside down
