Yet another "what's that noise" post

Coming from the rear of the car (not sure exactly where but suspect passenger side) I have a squealing noise, similar to the sound brakes make. Sounds a bit like the sticking brake caliper I had on my old car. Noise speeds up with wheel rotation and stops at very, very low speed or when the car is stood still. But it's unaffected by braking, it's there with no braking action, light braking or even fairly heavy braking. Tried a few emergency stops too, with no effect. And it seems to be getting louder over time.

Any ideas? Brakes, wheel bearing (although I thought they usually made a rumbling noise)? Car is a standard my00 turbo. Cheers!

I've had a few squealing wheel bearings before on other cars... When it first started making the noise did you notice it more while cornering? If you did then it probably will be the bearing.

Saying that, the car is relatively new and the wheel bearing should last a lot longer than 2 years.

Cheers,

Marty

Didn't notice it particularly when cornering, but having said that I did find a nice corner that I've been sliding round quite a bit recently Will experiment today to see if cornering increases the noise...

If it is the bearing i don't think it'll make a different cornering now, try it anyway...both directions of course . Usually when a wheel bearing is starting to go you'll get a squeak or rub when cornering but it'll be ok on the straight (usually the first sign of a wheel bearing needing replaced).

cheers,

Marty.

I had this from the front of my car when it was new. It scared the **** out of me.
I felt a bit daft when I traced it to a piece of grit stuck between the disc and the shroud.
Take the rear wheels off, and have a look.

Grit? Now there's a thought! Since moving over here I've been enjoying some nice gravel roads Maybe there's a small stone stuck somewhere...
