Alluminium Bonnet...

Question

Probably a silly question, but other than the weight difference what is the use of an alluminium bonnet?

Only ask as my 8 year old son came in last night and asked why his magnetic fishing rod would not 'catch' the top of my car!

After investigation (no scratches...phew!) I seem to have an alluminium bonnet, hooray I thought, does that make the car go faster, worth more?

Anyway if anyone out there can suggest another reason I would be grateful.

Nope, that's about it AFAIK.

Some people complain that an ally bonnet wobbles around too much at high speed, and are more susceptible to dents and stone chips, but i don't think anyone has quantified how much performance advantage there is over a steel bonnet. Got to be some though, but can't be huge...

I think the weight saving is as a part of the sum of the whole rather than the individual part. In other words, just putting an alloy bonnet on a 'fat' car will make little difference. But as part of a lightweight shell and such... well that's different.

Soooooo,

Should I go about getting me car weighed and comparing it with the standard weight?

Or is that just to sad?

Every litte bit helps, If you remove a few kgs from lots of places, then after a while, you have removed quite a lot, hence the RA. No goodies to play with, but the car is a good bit lighter
