STI 7 - Powerstation 4 Wheel Aligment
#1
If you own an STI7, take your car to Powerstation, and get them to setup the alignemnt.
Had mine done today and the difference in the car is amazing.
The rear camber/toe was just about spot on, with only the n/s rear needing a slight tweek on the toe.
The front - one wheel toeing in and one toeing out, and camber also way out.
Now, I had no issues with the car beforehand, the wheel was nice and central and no strange tyre wear.
After the adjustments :-
The first thing I noticed after coming off the ramp was how easy the wheel felt to turn from the straight ahead positon, compared to before.
Secondly, some fairly wild movements in the wheel under power with lock on, which previously I had put down to the front diff, have been drastically reduced. Still there, yes, but much more subtle.
Thirdly, the car feels much more stable and planted to the road at speed and when braking from speed, especially when the surface is less than perfect.
Fourth, the car had a tendency to "float" a little, on undulating roads, which apparantly is down to the springs. Well, it still does it a little, but nowhere near as much.
I am told that my car would have tended to understeer with the settings before adjustment. I have never felt this was a problem as obviously the front diff would be compensating.
Previously, it had always felt less focused than the P1(which has had bumpsteer/alignment) from a steering point of view.It didn't react as well to steering inputs and I had always felt slightly detached from what was going on beneath me.It now feels very similar, but slightly softer. So much more satisfying and a joy to drive.
Quite easily the best modification I will ever make to the car.

Seconded, as my Big Day Out to Powerstation thread described.
In fact, i'm feeling particularly honoured, in that my car had the most amount of bumpsteer they'd ever had to remove!!
Is that something to be proud of? No, probably not...
These mods ought to be obligatory on all Scoobs shouldn't they?

Depending on your location in the country, there are a number of other places that can do just as good a job on your suspension.
IIRC, Elite Tyres have more accurate alignment gear than powerstation and are based (at least one branch is) closer to the London region. It may be worth asking about similar outfits closer to you, as it could certainly save you petrol and time, if not some money on the actual alignment.
Setting up vehicle alignment isn't quite the black art some would have you believe, and the difference such an alignment session makes is generally fairly impressive as it would appear that subaru do not tend to make the best job of it at the factory.

RichiB,
In your first post you have "quoted" my statement:
"IIRC, Elite Tyres have more accurate alignment gear than powerstation and are based (at least one branch is) closer to the London region."
As:
"Elite Tyres have more accurate alignment gear than powerstation"
This, IMHO, significantly missrepresents my original statement.
In your second posting you wrote: "I take it from your silence that this was one of your totaly made up statements."
I haven't checked this bbs forum sooner, so didn't reply sooner. There is no other reason for my "silence".
You state that this is "one of <my> totaly made up statements.". To use your own choice of words, please justify this statement.
You then went on to write: "If you don't know for a fact best keep it zipped."
You misrepresented my statement. I clearly stated that it was subject to the best of my recollection, you didn't include this in your quote of my statement. I will recheck my information to confirm that my recollection of this fact is correct. You will notice I actually posted with "IIRC" in my statement, however I am reasonably sure the statement was correct. I will check, and If I was incorrect, I shall have no problem in admitting to this.
Regards,
Moray

Now now girls calm down.
Rich Tee - I have a 93WRX and have fitted Godspeed discs and under heavy braking the wheel gets a shed load of wobble on. Can this be caused by a worn steering rack? If so did it solve your problem? And can a geometry check reduce wheel wobble under heavy braking if it's out?
And out of interest, how much for a recon rack fitted and where did you get it from !?
Appreciate any help !
Cheers

I've just had my STI7 UK alignment done at Elite and i'm very happy with the result, pretty much the same outcome as Russell has seen above.
I'm not going to get into the Elite vs. Powerstation debate, but living in East London, much easier to get to Elite to just get alignment done.
I would always go to Powerstation for anything more involved, as I have before, with excellent results!

Glad to read that you have improvement with the wheels aligment of your STi7 (but I think it's a pity to see that brand new cars are not perfectly setted, it was also the case with the GT and many WRX).
Have anyone the Prodrive setting for the STi7 as camber and toe ?
I have used the ones for the GT on mine and the benefit was great.
Many thanks.

Pooder, Elite are based in Rainham Essex on the old A13.
I got the Prodrive settings as part of the work at Elite, seems to be much more sure footed now. Well worth the £58.

Alex, sorry not been around for a while. A good alignment can cure vibration under braking as can making sure the wheels are balanced properly.
Doubt if its the rack as this would produce whining under lock, and also loss of fluid in the reservior, you can check the rack by looking at the boots and squeezing them to see if there is any fluid in.
I got my rack recon through my local garage, got a good price 150 quid, but thats cause I know them, and also cause it took 3 WEEKS!!!
you can get second hand racks from breakers for about 250, but check that they will fit import wrx's as I did this first off and it wouldnt fit (although they said it would with a bit of hammering!!)
Hope this helps
