Secondary air system introduced on later models to reach emission targets
Google AI answer
"A secondary air system (or secondary air injection) is an emissions control device that injects fresh, oxygen-rich air into the exhaust manifold downstream of the engine's exhaust valves during cold starts. This process, active for 20-90 seconds, facilitates "afterburning" of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, while quickly heating the catalytic converter to operating temperature. "
