Check Engine warning light
#1
Anyone,
I've just bought a jap import MY93 (declared manufactured 92). If I drive the car hard(ish) a 'Check Engine' warning light comes on in the dash. The cars coming up to 70,000 miles. Can anyone tell me what this might refer to as its a bit ambiguous. Could it be something to do with the cam belt?
All advice greatly appreciated.

Not sure about a subaru expert nearby (live in east sussex).
The day before a rather large plume of smoke appeared from the exhaust during slow manuvering (getting into a parking space). Hasn't done that since. Could that be something to do with it?

JonnyC,
On UK models, you can connect the ECU diagnostics connectors (located under the steering column on MY99/MY00 UK cars). This tells you what the error code is.
It's worth putting up another post asking how to check the ECU diagnostics on JAP cars.
Once you know the exact code, then you can narrow down the problem. Failing that, you'd need to take it to a Subaru specialist to check the codes for you.

Johnny, I have a 93WRX running 98 or occasionally 97, all was running fine and I went on holiday for 16 days. When I got back the car didn't start purrfectly, and power was noticeably down (and responsiveness etc,) and I got some dark smoke under hard accel, and the check engine light came on intermittently.
After one long run (150 miles on M-ways) it stopped smoking and engine light went never to return again and power was returned to normal etc.
If it's been sat for donks, it might just have a build up of crap or moisture in there. Try a long run without caning it and see if the check engine light stops...
Hope this helps
Cheers
