Classic 1999 Impreza - misfire and flutter at top boost
I picked up a 1999 classic a few weeks back. Its a ej20 uk but with quite a few mods, sti intercooler, VF35 turbo and prints of 300bhp in 2015. It has one of these Dastek Unichip piggy back units hooked into the original ECU but I知 struggling to find anyone online that can map these any more!!
It痴 got quite a disappointing problem that I知 gutted about and I知 struggling to fix.
It boosts really nice 50% of the time but the other half of the time as you approach higher revs at high boost in the gear you are in, it starts to misfire and the engine flutter. That flutter I describe may just be misfiring still.
I changed the cam belt last week as I just wanted to do that for piece of mind. I then changed spark plugs, oil, air filter. I was hoping the new plugs would sort it out but the issue is still there.
I know I値l have to pay for rolling road and have it booked in next week. I知 just looking for ideas and thoughts whilst I wait!
Cheers
Chris

With it being a 99 you can map the stock ecu or go the ECU Labs route. Are you still running the stock leads.

So if you can map the stock ECU, is there any advantage at all in using the Dastek unit?
Sorry to sound ignorant but when you say stock leads, are you talking HT leads? Yes they are stock - any recommendations for an upgrade?

The HT leads don't last that long lol many have changed them out years ago. When you change them its better to upgrade them. I can't remember the exact make sorry but if you do a search on scoobynet it should come up.
There seems to be differences of opinion on the Dastek Unichip vr ecu remapping side again have a quick search on here quite a few threads on it. Personally I went with ECUlabs based on recommendation and on a classic has a lot more features.

On one of the threads I found JGM recommended remapping the ECU instead of the Dastek Unichip. If you are new to the community you might not know this but he was a brilliant mapper and very well know. He has unfortunately passed away.
A bit more information on ECU labs, they are newer than ECUtek and what they do on classics is they take the stock ecu and modify it physically to allow more programming for lack of a better word. So it isn't exactly a stand alone ecu but at the same time isn't the same as a stock ecu.
But have a look at those threads yourself, just thought it might be worth mentioning JGM (Jolly Green Monster) if you see his name pop up.

I really will research more about the ECUlabs but just a quick question, so is that a type of firmware that sits on the stock ECU and is there only certain mappers that can and will do this map?

So certain mappers will only deal with certain products and cars. ECUlabs physically modifies the internals of the stock ecu. So the mapper will take your one and give you the new one. Your old ecu will then be sent off to be modified and the cycle continues lol.
I'd suggest using a garage where a mapper comes to them unless they do it in house. Reason is if there are small issues on mapping day then they should be able to sort it.
Now what mapper you should use is a whole different can of worms.
