Default Air intake temps to high

Hi all , had a fresh map done on my car the chap mapping it has expressed that my rcm induction filter needs to be moved from the engine bay into the wing or at least boxed off in a sealed unit

This is due to ambient air intake temp being at 70c at idle
Has anyone had this before ?

He has said this is holding the car back and will become an issue in the summer

Now the car has had no expense spared all new parts
rcm headers and up pipe wrapped plus rcm full exhaust system with downpipe wrapped new mdx321t with motorsport carriers rcm complete fuel system from pump to parralelle rails 1050 rcm injectors rcm track attack aos, all new samco hoses fresh cambelt water pump the works also a nice fmic

I was surprised when he said temps were at 70c ambient

Now I have ordered a turbo blanket to try to take a bit away there

I will be having a water meth kit fitted bit the mappers wants my ambient temps down before I think of that

And listen I trust the mapper

So any solutions appreciated

Short ram intakes are notorious for pulling in hot air, particularly on a dyno. Oem airbox up to 400bhp, cold air intake in wing thereafter.

See I had caik on my Leon cupra r and the amount if time I had clogged filter or soaking wet was terrible so went back to stock

Ideally in the future I want to break the 500 barrier with a 2.1

I have a friend who fabricates so I will get him to make me a enclosure for the rcm filter but his work isn't cheap even mates rates

So was looking to see if any comonays already make these

A lot of subaru after market CAI's come with a shield or box
Maybe one of the following will fit or can be modified to fit the RCM one (does RCM not have one to suit??)

A custom sheild couldn't possibly cost much, the K&N kit I have on mine is just an L shape with a tunnel cut out for the pipe and a couple of tabs for fixing. Rubber seal around the edges.
I made one for a mates evo out of sheet aluminium. Make a template out of cardboard, flatten it out, replicate the shape and mark the folds. Cut it out, bend it where u marked it. Took about an hour and I made it in my shed.

Yeah its not hard work rcm do an inner wing box bit it's for smaller filter ,

my understanding is for it to make negative pressure like its own sealed environment my friend can do this will make me a bespoke airbox with snorkel attachment and wing duct all completely sealed kind of like oem but with the rcm inside it

the negative pressure I'm guessing with will suck the cold air from outside but with the same airflow of the rcm

But will all be tig welded in stainless then powder coated again its just his time and powder coating ill pay for

I didnt realise rcm induction heat soaked so bad

Sorry to revive the thread , my pal was just about to crack on woth making me a box then throws a bombshell of rain water being sucked into the filter

Had a quick Google and it does seem that water from motorway or what have you could possibly make it's way into the air box so I'm guessing the oem system with the resonator in the wing was to possibly collect water ?

If so does this mean I need to have some sort of water catch made up ?

Just when you think it's nice and easy fix

Problem is I want it doing right and don't want any issues when the final bit of the mapping is done
Has anyone on here made a completely sealed unit or is it just air feeds?

Sorry for all the daft questions

If anyone can help shed some light

If you look at the pic i posted of the K&N cone, i left the OEM scoop thing, which feeds air via the resonator in the wing. So literally the only thing missing is the air box itself. I still think just make a heat shield similar to mine that blocks the heat from the turbo as theres nothing to the other side that will be heating. Stick some heat reflective tape on it and make sure it is sealed up to the bonnet when its closed.
or if you really want, make a box that lines up with the wing resonator and get the air from it. But would probably be easier fitting the OEM box and filter back on.

looks good , im running fmic so done away with standard resonator , i the idea we had was a complete sealed box with feed from fog cover and using front snorkel but my pal mentioned water getting into the filter , may have to do this and maybe use a hydro sock over the filter or maybe some sort of baffle inside the box

i notice most dont run anybox just open filter but seems my car isnt happy with this for some reason

What FMIC core is it? Cheap ones can be less efficient.

the fmic is rooted anti clockwise so cool air is away from turbo side the core is mishimoto generally all the parts are rcm , and the mapper had no issue with any boost leaks or anything like that just mentioned air entering the filter from engine bay was at 70c and he would like it enclosed

Ahh I miss understood

I've considered doing an enclosure for mine but the hot pipe runs directly under the air filter so figured it may be pointless

yeah the chap who built the engine made sure it was anti clockwise , its just enclosing the filter i would of thought someone on here would of done this before
