Stupid question of the day (2): EJ22 Wiring looms, sensors and ECUs.

Right further to my other posts. I’m trying to work out how to put a scooby engine back in my camper. The current EJ22 needs ‘refreshing’ and the wiring harness that’s been hacked in to the stock VW loom looks like it was made by a colour blind toddler...

Assuming I rebuild the EJ22 which appears to be a Phase 1.5 (central single coil pack) and earlier SOHC heads (ones with 16 valve cast in to them) I’m going to need a new loom.

Im going to start from scratch and build a new loom and make sure all the sensors match the engine and ECU.

So questions.

1) I’m assuming that my ECU is the correct one for an EJ22 - is there any way to check? We’re there different ecu for the EJ20 &EJ22 and between the 90/95(?) and 96-99 ECUs? I assume most of it is the map that is flashed to it? Or are there pin out differences as well?

2) I’m struggling to find an EJ22 wiring loom, is there any difference between the EJ22 and EJ20 harness? I assume that the difference is in the ECU control and that all the sensor are the same etc.

3) Sensors: as my engine appears to be a bit of a mongrel should I use the sensors for the earlier heads or the later block or realistically is there no difference? I assume which ever I go for the loom, ecu map and sensors should just come from the same model year/type?

4) what else am I missing / should I be aware of?

Many thanks in advance.

Coil pack was central on all early 2.2 L Legacy's - you seem to be getting mixed up with Impreza versions which only had the 2.0L engine.

Ah ok, many thanks!

So its likely I just have an early (89-84) engine in that case?

So so I should just get sensors (where necessary), loom etc to suit an early engine.

Right Update.

The engine is a EJ22MUB (96-98?) with early SOHC heads and a yet to be identified intake manifold.

I have two ECU’s:
22611AA980 which the part number comes back to a EJ20 from 96-99 which was ‘running’ the engine previously - I think the original set up was an EJ20 and when I bent the bottom end the rebuild used an EJ22 block they had to hand.

The other ECU I have which apparently came from a donor car is 31711AE070 Which comes back to being a 2001ish 2.5l...

Shall I just bite the bullet and buy an 89-94 Ecu for an EJ22 which came from the same year as the heads (I.e Sohc) or should I go on the age of the rest of the block? I found one in the USA so I would have to import it to the UK but it’s the right ECU for a 93 EJ22 which cover the period of the Heads and the loom I have located...

Same goes for wiring loom - from what I can determine the EJ20 & EJ22 wiring looms are almost identical from this era.

Ive found a 2.0l 93-96 full loom which I’m hoping will do the trick...

Any advice appreciated...
