Default Petrol Smell when really cold

After some ideas on this as its very odd, last few days in these REALLY cold mornings I have left it to idle for a couple of mins while the windows clear etc and there is a VERY strong smell of petrol in the car, as soon as its warmed up or even after being at work and start cold there is no smell. Its just overnight it seems.

Had the suspension changed a week ago cant see how that could cause anything but took it back to the garage today and we looked all over under the bonnet with a light and couldn't find any leaks around fuel pipes etc

any ideas on this appreciated! have it booked in next week to remove alternator to get a better look...

this did pop up in google when I was searching.. il have a full read :-)

I will try Subaru to see if there is a recall on mine, its 05 tho.. I have an outstanding recall on the air bag I believe as well. I hope it doesn't involve taking all that apart on the pics as "labour intensive" means expensive when I have just spend 1K on suspension!!

are there any pictures that can show me where this is as this is something I could at least try before taking it the garage ......

"After we looked around some more we found the true culprit of the gas smell; the fuel pressure regulator close to cylinder #1. The Philips bolts were almost figure tight. I tightened them and I’m almost certain that would have fixed the problem"

Also look to the flexible pipes running across the bulkhead. One of mine split after I'd been smelling petrol a month, and doused the hot turbo and exhaust with petrol

I stood watching it evaporate, awaiting the wooooof! which never came.
All now replaced with R9 rated new stuff.

Item 4 all the screws tight as anything so not that :-( smell appears to be from the middle towards the back ie in front of inter cooler area, looked everywhere with a torch and just cant see any leaks. Will check the bulkhead as well. Been driving a bit today, again smell strong on first start up it was -6 today! but on driving round no smell at all and stopped at several shops and sat in traffice no smell, so defo only when very cold

The smel being across the bulkhead area does make me suspicious that it's the flexible pipes. I think mine had been allowing vapour out for a while before splitting.

I had a similar issue with my bugeye in the big freeze of 2010. Got it sorted free of charge under Subaru Service Bulletin 09-36-03. Here's the link to my posts back in 2010:

I had to go to my local Subaru dealer armed with a copy of the service bulletin as they claimed they knew nothing of it.

So Subaru dealer has rang me back and they so no outstanding recalls (apart from the airbag)

The thing is its not smelling now the temperature has increased so for a garage to find a smell that isn't there inst easy!

I got prices for the 2 parts mentioned on that recall paper £86.07 and £16.29 for the two bits...

Same as what I had on a classic. Only happened when really cold out. Just got 1' of fuel hose, cut two pieces to size and works fine. I never find out the prices, but I wouldn't have spent a ton on two bits of fuel hose!

You might be able to wiggle the metal lines slightly to invoke it. I seem to remember I could make it better/worse by wiggling the metal line slightly.
