Strong petrol smell on very cold nights
Ive recently been noticing a strong petrol smell when driving from my mates house on very cold evenings, its only seems to happen when its below 0c and goes away once the car has warmed up. Ive checked for fueal leaks but cant find anythihng , Im assuming its the auto choke thats overdoing the fueling when its cold but wheres the smell coming from and is it cause for concern.

If you have a decat or they haven't warmed up, the exhaust will stink of nothing but petrol on a cold start.
Scoobs run very very rich when cold (moreso than other cars in my experience) - which makes them missfire, run rough on revving, put clouds of white smoke out the back, stink of petrol (or a very sweet pungent smell if the cats have warmed up) and makes them prone to flooding if stalled.

Mine does the same mate. When i started it the other evening i thought the back was on fire, the amount of smoke coming from the exhaust was unreal! Just put it down to being a combination of the cold weather and the ppp. It does settle down after a couple of mins.

Thats a relief, my system is fully de-catted , I thought something was gonna burst into flames. I only get the smell if the heater is on, I leave it on auto setting and generally after 2-3 mins or so the heater kicks in and I get the petrol smell, could I have a leak on the uppipe or downpipe as it seems to smell quite strong when I pop the bonnet.

If the smell is real strong im betting you have a fuel leak somewhere..I had exactly the same symptons on my BM, I couldnt find an obvious leak anywhere but my indy showed me the perished fuel lines once they'd replaced, very small hairline cracks in the rubber pipe which could really only be seen when the line was stretched/pulled.
Get it checked to be on the safe side

Just googled "impreza cold weather fuel smell " and it came up with a sh*t load of info, very common problem but quite costly to fix if you get it done at a main dealer (intake manifold has to be removed) , gonna see if my local dealer will do it as a recall as it does appear to be a manufacturing defect , why should I have to pay for something thats been faulty from day 1.
