Default Subaru Idle Problem

i have a subaru impreza outback 2.2 1997. the sypmtons started after i was driving on low fuel for a day.... i already changed the fuel pump. symptoms started out with low idle when starting sometimes even stalling. loss of power on uphill and even on highway when i floor it nothing really happens. tried to clean the air intake and now it is even worse. when i start the car it revs up but than looses rpms right away and dies. i can keep it alive with giving it some gas but the rpms jump around. i took it for a drive and it seems the engine is not knowing what to do anymore. i also changed the pcv but did not change anything. any ideas?
Thanks,
Martin

check under the steering column for 2 set of plugs, 2 green and 2 black. these are diagnostic plugs. they give out codes when the black plugs are connected via the check engine light.

have a look before spending any more money

What should i do with the black plugs? can i hook up a reader to them? i had some codes read out and it was all cylinders misfire and a low circuit input on the TPS. but this could be because i unplugged it and did not remove the code.

Early US cars are OBD compliant so codes can be read with a scanner.

the black plug connect together, turn on the ignition but dont start the engine. the cel light will flash. if no codes it will flas a constant on off. if a code is recorded then it a long flash for a 10 and a short flash for a 1. so 3 long flashed and 2 short flashes is 32. there might be multiple codes. so they will flash in sequence.

the only clue the codes gave me is the misfire in all cylinders and the tps. when i disconnect the tps and can not rev the rpms over 2000. when connected i can. so i guess tps is working. maybe mass air flow sensor?

the shop also told me that it is a rich misfire. so it must be something with the air/fuel mixture.

A couple of things

" I already changed the fuel pump" - have you changed the fuel filter in the engine bay ?

"tried to clean the air intake" - have you disconnected the air inlet temp sensor in the air filter housing??
